My computer room is too hot. Athlon system locked up today. :(

This stinks. Athlon and sun systems down until I can get a new wireless adapter to put the systems in the basement. :(

The basement has always been kind to be. I'm sure your pcs will find it a most comfortable change of scenery.

I've almost got it clean enough to move some computers down. I checked best buy's site to make sure they should have an 802.11b adapter that will work. This should all be solved tomorrow :D

Except for the noise...

During the winter, my PC never seems to help warm my room, so I always end up adding a little electric heater to make things more comfortable. But during the summer, the PC always seems to make things so much hotter that it's unbearable.

Hmm, a low-powered laptop as an X terminal sounds nice. :D

Hope you get your systems back up and running soon, n0c. At any rate, they'll probably be back together well before these forums. ;)

Hmm, I can say that the basement is very nice to athlons. just make sure your case is closed ,so any critters don't sneak in!

take the sides off those cases guys and get a cheap desk fan from a store like target or walmart and clip it to the side of your case and let the air flow in. it will keep the computer cooler and its cheap. added noise and about a 5 degree F temp rise will be the drawbacks however....

ps-ive been using computers to heat my condo for the past 2 winters and my electrical bill has gone down significantly while my room temp has been comfortable :)

I've got the sides off. List of computers in a room with poor ventilation, especially since another room is being worked on and all the junk from there is now in the computer room:
Athlon 1800+ (the one having problems)
Dual p3 866
Ultra 10
SPARCstation 10
p3 800

I picked up a wireless doohicky, so I should be able to move them as soon as I clean enough space. I also picked up a couple of fans, but thinking about it, I'm not so sure my powersupply will survive (maybe a 400, can't remember). Since I was out, and the price was "right" I picked up a DVDRW thingy. I'll probably put that in the dual p3, not sure just yet.

Anyways, I'll have this fixed within the week. :D

I'm thinking this will have to wait until the end of the week to get finished. I've got a place almost cleaned up enough, or another area that might be ideal if I clean it. I'll be making sure the dehumidifier works soon.

I picked up a wireless doohicky, and of course it doesn't work. These things need to be labeled better. I've got another one on the way, but it will take a few days to get it. Not really a big deal, it'll all be worth it in the end ;)

It's a possibility.

I checked the list of known good wireless network adapters, and chose one of them I could find at a local best buy. It was a Linksys WUSB11 I believe. Now v3 is supposedly the one that works, but no where on the box is the version mentioned.

I had previously purchased a Linksys PCI wireless network iinterface. It worked perfectly, so I went to Best Buy a few months later to purchase another one. I made sure I got the same model and everything. In the mean time, Linksys switched chipset vendors, so the second card was worthless to me.

I'll be happy soon though. :)

115 degree F in the attic closet where I have 3 Athlons and one Intel. All the machines continue to crank no problem, over 2 years now.

In July/Aug will probably hit at leat 140 in there again and they will still be fine.

Heat is the only thing I can think of that would cause it. The machine (stable for quite a while now with no recent changes) just locked up, and then continued to lock up on boot.

It's working now, and crunching md5 offline. It should be online by the end of the week. Plus, it puts a machine in a more convenient place for me (kinda). So I'll be happy with the change.

Plus it got me to clean. :Q

And it gave me the excuse to go the most evil store on earth and buy more than I planned (I swear I only went in for the wireless adapter and a movie!). :p

EDIT: And this machine has lasted in the heat before. Last summer was pretty nasty and it gave me no problems. But I've added a couple of SCSI disks since then.

Same here. I run my duallie and P4 in my computer room during the winter in hopes that I can keep the temperature above 70, but I still have to add an 1100 watt electric heater to keep my room somewhat comfortable! Bad insulation I guess. Now that the warmer weather is coming on, I've stopped DC'ing altogether. :(
