Ugh. Had to sell my 40gb iPod.

Just got my 40gb ipod after months of thinking only to find out I can't use this stupid POS for jogging. Called up Apple to complain and they tell me it's a known issue and that there's currently no fix for it except to create a short playlist and stop jogging while it's loading another and then resume once playback is ready. Tells me it wasn't designed for jogging purposes. Ridiculous.

Apparently the thing freezes up when all of it's 32mb buffer get's used up and tries to load more data to the buffer from the internal drive while in motion. The fact that I encoded everything at 256mbps doesn't help either. The thing totally freezes up. I can't restart it or anything and have to wait till the battery drains out. Reminds me of MacOS9.... Another problem I had is with my old firewire card which had a Ti chipset on it, which is supposed to be very compatible with every firewire device. It doesn't seem to like it so my PC doesn't recognize it when it's connected and it sometimes freezes XP. I had to get another card but luckily a cheap Via chipset card worked fine.

When it was working it was great and the earbuds were fairly comfortable but my AT headphones sound 10000x better with less distortion and far better detail..although that's an unfair comparison.

I made a promise to myself after owning several Macs not to buy another Apple product again but I gave them another chance being the nice cool guy I am and they somehow miraculously blew it.

My sister now has a 1 week old 40gb iPod for $300, full of heavy metal instrumentals. *Sigh*

Has anyone else had the same problem?

so........next question

what's a good completely solid state mp3 player that can take some abuse from a decent company and supports 256mbps encoding? I don't need any support other than mp3. I need about 2 hours of continuous music.

which is the best MP3 player out then ?

The creative one, dell one, supposedly 24 hour battery life?????

That sucks, and I would be royally pissed.

Seems like common sense to me that it wouldn't work well while jogging... it uses a hard drive with sensitive moving parts. Try holding a book in front of your face and reading it while moving it around erratically. Are there other hard drive based players that work while jogging?

I like the Dell DJ thing. iRiver also has something out. Friend has the Rio Karma. Yadda yadda, they're all better than whatever Apple puts out.

All hard drive based players are bad for jogging. What surprises me though is that you couldn't reset the unit after freeze occurred. My Creative Zen Touch froze a few times, but I can simply reset it (there is a reset hole) and it will reboot. But my freeze was due to corruptted songs. I had 15 songs with bad content. I removed them and no freezes since.

Get a Dell Axim X30 pda (~$250) and a 1 GB SD card for about $100. Problem solved and it's a hell of a lot more versatile than a mp3 player.

creative muvo 256mb TX or TX FM is your best bet. TX sells for $70. FM version sells for $105 at walmart. Search for it.

first, dancing with it will work, after all, in the ads they're not dancing continuously for half an hour. Second, would you expect an expensive laptop to work better than a cheap one when bouncing violently? Just because it's expensive doesn't mean it can do things it was never intended to do.

it hisses

though depending on your hearing it may not be noticeable, especially while jogging

Much as I hate the iPod, I can't blame Apple here. Hard drives aren't meant to be shaken. Get a flash player for exercising.
