UGH, got a deliquent fine from court, EDITED

So I got a ticket a couple months ago..mailed in the check to pay for it in full amount..and today I get a notice that says I didn't pay it, and am being fined $300 for it.

The last time I got a ticket I paid for it at the court place, and got receipts and all that, so I could easily prove that I paid for it..but this time since I mailed it in what can I do to show them that I paid?

EDIT: Now that I think about it though..I think my payment was due on 5/28, but I went to the court on 5/26 to request a trial by declaration, and got a NEW extension on my payment to 6/07 I think. I then mailed the payment on 5/29 I think. The fine HOPEFULLY just represents late payment on my old deadline.

Your canceled check perhaps?

Get the cashed check back from your bank.

If they cashed the check, the mark the bank puts on the check means cancelled (not bounced)... that means the check has cleared the bank. If you balance your checkbook and have been off by the amount of the ticket for several months, it should have alerted you that something was wrong with the fine you payed.

So, if the check was never cashed, unless you sent it certified mail, with return receipt, you have no way to prove that you attempted to pay the fine... maybe it got lost in the mail, who knows. BUT, you should have realized they didn't cash the check.

Or, they cashed the check. Get that check back from the bank (the "cancelled check"), and use it for proof.

Why would the check be canceled??

rofl. First checking account? When you pay via check, the person who receives the check endorses it on the back, yes? Well, after they deposit it, it is returned to your bank for record keeping. This is called a 'cancelled check'.

Because your bank cancels it after paying it?

If your bank statement doesn't include the originals nor copies of your canceled checks, get them to send you a copy of the canceled check...you may have to pay a small fee for it but it won't be $300! :Q
