Ugh, developed a bad exhaust leak on the way home today. Update: Now with audio! Update2: Fixed.

I had the same thing happen to me on my 240SX. Turned out that one of the bolts seemed to be missing on the exhaust manifold. The mechanic simply changed the gasket, replaced the bolts and then it was good as new.

I first noticed the leak about 2 weeks ago, although at that point I thought maybe I just needed a tuneup, just sounded like it was running a little rough.

Well, on the way home today, it got REALLY bad. I thought I lost my oil filter and was dry or something.

Got off at the next exit, pulled into a gas station, and popped the hood... *bwap* *bwap* *bwap* *bwap*

Oh. Well, at least my engine isn't about to implode.

Appears to be where the manifold meets the rest of the exhaust tract.

So I go about driving home.. there's a little muffler shop right by the house, so I went in there.. he couldn't get to me till tomorrow.

So now I have to drive to and from work (about 25 miles each way) like this. It sounds like a fscking Harley.

...Which wouldn't be so bad, but it's only one bank of cylinders.. so instead of sounding badass, it sounds like it's a POS. 😛

Obviously I'm going to go out and see if there are any bolts lose, but they're all there as far as I can tell, so I'm not really sure what happened.

Would some of that exhaust leak patch tape stuff have any effect? lol.. probably not much since it's at the flange, woudldn't actualy be able to seal it up..

Oh well, not that big of a deal I guess.. It would just suck to get pulled over or something.

Update: Video/Sound

lol.. It doesen't sound nearly as bad on the camera.... It's much louder in real life.

man you should leave it.....it sounds well cool.....thats a nice sound, like a gurgling V8 with carbs

That's because it is a big gurgling V8 with carbs. 😛

I drive a 1981 Chevy Custom Deluxe 1/2 ton work truck. The engine is newer, only has about 30,000 miles on it.

350, bored out 0.030, forged internals, high CR heads(10.5:1), mild cam, etc...

wanna do another video cranking it all the way up? 😀

I've got an exhaust leak on my '99 Civic too...sounds cool when I rev it in neutral, but it's actually annoying when I actually have to downshift to go around someone (afraid of a cop hearing me)...

*EDIT* i've actually had the car for 9 months now (15k miles) and it's always had that leak...maybe i should have it looked at tomorrow...

You mean about the fix? lol..

The gasket was completely missing. He replaced it with a steel gasket and some hardened bolts, to make it easier to mess with in the future if anything goes awry. Nice guy.. just a little local muffler shop.

Hey, that doesn't sound that bad!
Yeah, the video made it sound like I have a performance exhaust or something.

The camera didn't pick up very much of the treble. It was really loud.
