Last weekend I managed to score a VisionTek R9 290 for $460 after tax from Dell. They had it listed for $479, and then I had a coupon code for 10% off or something, free shipping too. Reference cooler, which I know is not ideal. They have since upped the price to $579.
Got an e-mail today saying my shipment has been delayed until the 28th, but I have a feeling they will just keep delaying it. I know VisionTek has supposedly had some trouble stocking components for these cards...
I had wanted to get an R9 290 since it first came out, at $400 MSRP it seemed like a great deal for the performance. Then I decided to wait for aftermarket coolers because of the lackluster reference design. But then the mining craze came into full swing, and prices skyrocketed.
My plan was to test both my 770 and the 290 in BF4 on Windows 7, then upgrade to Windows 8.1 and re-test, then test out Mantle. Then sell whichever card I didn't want, or maybe both and upgrade to a 780. I know I can make money off the 290, but that is beside the point. I am a little concerned, if Dell keeps delaying, the price of the 290 will go back to normal and I'll regret buying a reference-cooled card if aftermarket are the same price.
I'm thinking if they delay it another week or two, I'll cancel the order. It is a decent deal, but not worth the hassle.
