Ugh...Crappy SAT Scores

The first time I took the SATs I did pretty bad, and got somewhere around a 990 out of 1600. The second time, this time, I wound up with the SAME score. I took a class and worked my ass off, and I had my math up to a 550 and now I take the actual test and get a 420. Am I just a bad test taker?

If you did your best then you did your best. As long as you have a decent GPA it shouldn't be that big of a deal, although you may consider taking the ACT as people that do less than stellar on the SAT tend to do a little bit better on the ACT.

What kind of class did you take? Some of the better classes offer guarantees of performance improvement.

You might also want to look at the Princeton Review books. They offer some great test taking strategies for the SAT, and they helped me quite a bit.

OP: honestly, you've just gotta practice. If you're nervous during the test, take practice ones over and over in as close to the test environment as possible. if you have trouble with the math section, get a bunch of SAT books and do all the practice problems, check your answers, do the ones you got wrong over again, and repeat.

as far as verbal goes, you can drill words and stuff- but honestly, that kinda had to start years ago. my high verbal score was entirely due to a childhood and adolescence spent reading tons and tons of books.

I've done so many math problems that I've lost count... In the practice tests I had my math score up to about 550 up from 420, then I wind up dropping back down to a 420 when I take the actual test. As for the english section, I love to read and I've read tons and tons of books, and I also enjoy writing. I don't think that I've ever gotten anything lower than a A- in any of my english classes...

One thing about SAT math. Read the question carefully. It is very simple math, but the way they worded it make it tricky sometimes.

The math is all little tricks. Not terribly complex

Verbal section is all about knowing your vocab. Im surprised after a class you're still at 990...

This one is wise. Math has never been my thing (Two engineering degrees what?), but I've read all my life and smoked the verbal (Don't remember what I got tho ). I'd say its too late for your SAT verbal, but you can up the math.

Hmmm, really...if you have an example of your writing I could take a look at it. But maybe you're just not articulate enough, I dunno. What kind of books did you read?
