I went on a brief vacation to the San Jose area for a Con over memorial day weekend. Before I left I put a load of dishes in the dishwasher and set it to run, so I wouldn't have to worry about things rotting in the sink or whatnot. Heh, irony... gets me every time.
First off, I caught a killer of a cold which turned into bacterial nasties while I was in SJ, so I wasn't able to get back as soon as I thought I'd be able to. (Like a week and a half later. I was SICK) I get back to the apartment, set stuff down and go to the kitchen, where I'm greeted by this odd smell. "Huh, did I forget to run the garbage disposal?" Nope, the drain's clean. Garbage can is completely empty too. Then I open the dishwasher.
The smell I'd like to describe is something I think is instinctively burned into our brains as very, very bad. Opening the dishwasher was the closest I've ever been to throwing up due to a smell.
See, what happened is that one of the cups I had in the dishwasher somehow got overturned, so it was able to collect water. This must have happened early, 'cause apparently all the little bits of food still stuck to the stuff in the upper tray -- including dried cat food -- fell into the cup. Then it sat there... for 10 days.
Yeah, imagine that smell. Or don't.
Anyway, I've rinsed the dishes, run the dishwasher another 2 times and it STILL smells like... well, like death. Anybody got some advice on how to get rid of a smell that has an apparent life of its own?
