Uggh... godawful smell, BEGONE!

I went on a brief vacation to the San Jose area for a Con over memorial day weekend. Before I left I put a load of dishes in the dishwasher and set it to run, so I wouldn't have to worry about things rotting in the sink or whatnot. Heh, irony... gets me every time.

First off, I caught a killer of a cold which turned into bacterial nasties while I was in SJ, so I wasn't able to get back as soon as I thought I'd be able to. (Like a week and a half later. I was SICK) I get back to the apartment, set stuff down and go to the kitchen, where I'm greeted by this odd smell. "Huh, did I forget to run the garbage disposal?" Nope, the drain's clean. Garbage can is completely empty too. Then I open the dishwasher.

The smell I'd like to describe is something I think is instinctively burned into our brains as very, very bad. Opening the dishwasher was the closest I've ever been to throwing up due to a smell.

See, what happened is that one of the cups I had in the dishwasher somehow got overturned, so it was able to collect water. This must have happened early, 'cause apparently all the little bits of food still stuck to the stuff in the upper tray -- including dried cat food -- fell into the cup. Then it sat there... for 10 days.

Yeah, imagine that smell. Or don't.

Anyway, I've rinsed the dishes, run the dishwasher another 2 times and it STILL smells like... well, like death. Anybody got some advice on how to get rid of a smell that has an apparent life of its own?

Fill the dispensers with powdered laundry bleach and run it on the longest cycle and then once more with detergent to get rid of the bleach smell.

The best way is to fill the dispenser with liquid dish soap. It'll get rid of it.

LOL!! What a mess the suds from that would be! Be like some of the TV shows where the suds completely fill a room!
Try running the D/W with a cup of chlorine bleach in it...JUST bleach. That should kill the bacteria growing in the system. Then rinse it twice. YOu might have to run it again with the normal D/W soap to get rid of any food stuff left in there, or you may not, but bleach would be the FIRST wash...followed by a double rinse.
IF the smell has permeated the insulation, you might have to pull the machine and replace it. Just fiberglass batting I believe...

I dumped a bunch of baking soda (actually the contents of an old fridge package I was throwing out) during the pre-wash and wash cycles and it cleared up the smell pretty good. Unfortunately it also made the dishes I had in there kinda... sticky. So I'm running the dishwasher again, with detergent. Hopefully the smell won't magically come back.

Um, just don't put stuff with catfood on it in there. I can't stand putting anything cat related into a human-use dishwasher run.

I also hate cats.

The cat food wasn't what caused the worst of the smell, it just helped it along.

What on earth is worse than cat food?

Cat food is processed heavily, strained, pulped, pate'd and otherwise turned into something that doesn't really rot well.

The large tupperware that used to hold that homemade meat sauce, on the other hand... well that's just ripe for all sorts of fun things. Botulism springs to mind.
