About a month ago I was shooting by the ocean and a huge wave came up, tripped me, and washed me ten feet across the beach submerged with all my camera gear on. From that point on, my Rebel XT has been having problems.

1. Sometimes the shutter goes off by itself.
2. The shutter goes off by rotating the wheel next to the shutter button.
3. Sometimes a halfway shutter press results in a shot being taken.

I opened up the camera and couldn't see anything wrong with the mechanisms next to the shutter button. No shorted wires or anything. In fact, there aren't any wires, but ribbon cables.

This is the second time I've had to repair this camera due to damage. The first time was $200. Now this for $200 again.

What would you do? Would you scrap the camera, try to sell it for parts, or get it repaired?

PROBLEM WITH MAIN DIAL AND SHUTTER, CHECK AND CLEAN ALL FUNCTIONS.MINIMUM LABOR RATE, INCLUDES MINOR PARTS

Parts: $0
Labor: $180.00
Sales Tax: $11.70
Shipping: $15.98
Total: $207.68

They took the corrosion off the connections. Problem is with salt water, or pool water is the corrosion will the camera days later. It might shoot fine after drying for a while, but it will fall victim.
The best thing to do to fight the inevitable is to dunk the camera in filtered water. It won't hurt anymore, only has a chance of helping it.

DOes the repear come with some kint of warrenty? If not I would buy a new camera. Seeing the problems you are encountering a secondhand weather sealed one would not be a bad idea..

I'd repair it. A functional Rebel XT is worth more then $200 on the open market. Repair and wait for the 40D is what I would do (since you already have a back-up).

Yep, that told me it would cost about that much to repair my sd200 when i bought it on sale for 179.

Your camera is still worth quite a bit :)

I just paid $200 to fix a REBEL.... partly because I do not want to buy an XT/i, I only want a 30D. But I can't swing it yet. Sure, I could have bought another used one, but at least this one is fixed and I know it should be good for a while.. hopefully. But a second time.. it would be hard to swallow. If you can shoot w/ one body for a while, I'd say hold off on it.
