I was watching two fights earlier this evening on television, and in both matches the referee called the fight when one of the guys was knocked down from a punch.
No - you have to be unable to defend yourself. Most fights with knockdowns continue. It all depends on the fighter. Some are able to recover, and fight on. But if the fighter is truly out, the ref must stop the fight for safety reasons.
If he was clearly knocked out on his feet, then sure, but MOST of the time the ref'll let the attacker get a few more hits in to confirm that the the other guy can't defend himself.
