UFC LHW Champ - Jon Jones Arrested for DUI, Totals Bentley

RPD

Diamond Member
Remember that sweet Bentley Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was riding around in that reportedly cost $190,000 (pic after the jump)? Yeah, it's been totaled.
That's because "Bones" crashed it into a pole in the early morning hours today (Sat., May 19, 2012) in Binghamton, New York. But that's not even the worst part.
Once police arrived on the scene, Jones was arrested for driving under the influence. TMZ.com has the story:
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Jones was involved in an accident at around 5:00 AM in Binghamton, NY. We're told the car -- which Jones crashed into a pole -- was totaled and cops arrested Jones on the scene for DUI.
According to our sources, Jones was taken into custody by Broome County Sheriff and bailed out a few hours later ... by his mom. Jones is from nearby Ithaca.
This comes less than one month after Jones successfully defended his 205-pound title with a unanimous decision victory over former teammate Rashad Evans at UFC 145 in Atlanta. His next fight is scheduled for Sept. 1 against Dan Henderson at UFC 151 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

All I can say is this is EXACTLY why people hate/dislike him. He is so damn fake. In the ring or promoting himself he's Mr. Religious even has a tat of verse from the Bible.

What a tool.

err while i agree i think jones persona is a act. the guy is lucky he didn't hurt himself or others.

though i do think it hurts UFC for sponsoring him so fast. l

Catholics drink a ton of wine.
Jewish persons arent forbidden from drinking.
Certain Christian denominations ban/frown on drinking but only the fundies of their groups actually follow through on it. Baptist's are some of the biggest drinkers I have ever seen even though it goes against their teachings.

Thanks for information I already knew. Its one thing to drink or get drunk, its another to do so then drive, its another to do this while being overly religiuos and another entirely when you are a very public figure with a rep built on upon being a goodie goodie. You add them ALL up and you get a person who is a douche.

Don't care for his peronality, but as a fighter he's bad ass to watch. What he did to Shogun, Machida & Rampage was crazy. MMA won't see another dude like him imho.

yeah they will.

but yes he is amazing fighter. he uses his size very well.

Ahahaa, the comments on that Bentley thread ...

And the making of Mike Tyson 2.0 begins ... 🙂

Just another moment to denote in the downward trend of the UFC. Has anyone watched the fights they air on Fuel? They look so WWE fake it is sad. I've given up on MMA as being anything more than another sports entertainment brand.

lol not even.

while i think the "persona" that they create is fake. the fights are real.

Listen I used to be a gigantic MMA fan. I ordered the Pride New Years where Fedor fought Cro Cop for the title and followed the sport for years before and since, including watching almost every TUF since the premiere of the first season. I understand what you are saying but I see so many things that are suspect in so many of these fights nowadays that it all seems pretty fake, especially when you add in the WWE style smack talk that goes down....except for Sonnen, he can talk all he wants...lol

That said, please don't take this as an attack on you or your love of the sport. I loved it for a long time, too. I've just watched so many fights that seemed to be less of a fight and more of a professional wrestling match that I am completely turned off to the sport now.

They don't look like professional wrestling matches to me and I was thoroughly entertained with the Korean Zombie / Poirier fight.

And the fight with Maldonado and the Russian but those are quickly becoming the exception instead of the norm. Like I said, I'm not bashing you guy but a lot of it just seems very fake and unappealing now.

Very disappointed in Jones.

However, I'm still trying to figure out how Jones' religion has anything to do with the DUI, as the OP seems to imply.

He's marketed as a goody two shoes (in addition to his in cage abilities), has a verse of Philippians tattooed on his chest and regularly praises God after matches.

I'm not going to look up the exact verse, but it's in the Bible which basically says one shouldn't get drunk. Some people take it so far as to NEVER consume any alcohol, but needless to say being full on drunk is not good in the bible. It's hypocritical to sell yourself as such then go get busted for a DUI. Get it?

”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

Still not sure what you're getting at. Maybe I'm just stupid. Plenty of religious people drink, and many get drunk. Hell, I come from a mostly Catholic family on my mom's side, and they were drunk every weekend.

Ok, I'm not sure if you are being dense on purpose or what.

Do these same people market themselves as role models, do regular bible thumping on national/ppv TV as well to make money? I don't know how much more obvious, or other comparisons I can draw for you in this case.

My answer to you is alcohol and religious piety aren't mutually exclusive. Sure, maybe the most adherent of evangelists "market" themselves in a way that would include forsaking alcohol, but I've never seen Jones do such and I've been following him for a long time. Again, just because you're religious doesn't mean you don't drink, and drink too much at times. I think you are trying to lump every religious person into one group.

I'm lumping all heavily religious people that like to quote Bible verses that fit their current agenda, whatever it may be. It's really easy to pick one and say SEE IT says it here and then ignore the rest of the book or whatever verses they feel to conveniently not follow because it doesn't fit their current social agenda (i.e. drinking, kids out of wedlock, whatever, etc etc). For example usually the same people that are against gay marriage will point to the verses relevant to it, but these are the same people that have no issues drinking because, well that'd really suck to stop drinking.

I'll just restate my original opinion about this situation, it's funny because Jon likes to market himself as a role model, a bible thumper and a good person everyone should look up to. IMO when you start quoting verses from the bible and to go so far as to have a tattoo of a verse on your chest, opens yourself up to (rightfully so) criticism about all the other verses you choose to ignore (in Jon's case drinking, drunkenness and having kids out of wedlock if not more).

It's not like this was Rampage who never marketed himself as such a person did this, no one would really be that surprised if this happened to him.

Eh, I think people hate Jon Jones because simply because he's really, really good at what he does...good enough to beat the other guys fans might have liked more.

That being said, obviously DWI/DUI is stupid. Hopefully he'll learn from it.
