Every one of the shots on the ground were to the back of the head. Literally, the very back. This shit is getting out of hand.

the replay showed the blow that brought him down was a glancing shot to the the back of the head and it probably cut off blood flow to his head. Mcgregor then lowers his right elbow to strike but poirer fell straight down. That was really close to an illegal shot but since the guy was moving so I dont know. Weird hit to end the fight.

He's the real deal though. I love Poirier and he was a step behind the entire fight. After the first 30 seconds you could tell where this was heading.

Doesn't matter. He was just fine until he got hit in the back of the head on 5 straight punches.

didn't he just hammerfist him in the back of the head until the ref calls off the fight, that legal?

Think cowboy has been in too many wars. He looks slower and his reactions are slow.

this is a gif someone posted 10 seconds after what was sopposed to be the start. he is still sitting there

some are saying he sat 20-30 seconds

To be fair, what caused the near stoppage was illegal too. Lol.

IMHO only blow #3 was illegal.

Back of the head, as explained a few times by the announcers, is a strip like a Mohawk running down down. It doesn't cover the back of the ear, shoulder blades, etc.

#1 was the one that caused him Poirier to go down. It was a left hook that made initial contact behind the ear right, as Poirier ducked down.

#2 was a hammerfist behind the right ear as well.

#3 was a left hammerfirst right to the back of the head.

#4 was a left punch to behind the left ear.

#5 was like #4.

You cant punch behind the ear unless standing. Illegal blows to the head can be summarized by anything behind over-the-head headphones. Only #1 was remotely legitimate. Poirier would have been just fine if it wasn't for the illegal blows.

That's not correct, at least not according to the 2008 Unified Rules of MMA.

Illegal Strikes to the Back of the Head

The Committee has found a compromise between the Mohawk definition and the headphones definition. The Committee recommends a nape of the neck definition. Basically, the group concluded that a strike that touches the ear is generally acceptable. Strikes are not permissible in the nape of the neck area up until the top of the ears. Above the ears, permissible strikes do not include the Mohawk area from the top of the ears up until the crown of the head. The crown of the head is found where the head begins to curve. In other words, strikes behind the crown of the head and above the ears are not permissible within the Mohawk area. Strikes below the top of the ear are not permissible within the nape of the neck area.

Conor McGregor needs a large plate of STFU, and I look forward to his next opponent serving it.

I don't understand the hype that surrounds him, it seems like the ufc realized "we need to "create" a fighter". I mean Chris Cariaso had 10 fights in the ufc and no one knows who he is, after only 3 fights McGregor is all of a sudden the best contender in the world.

LOL I read an article on Dana gushing over Conor, he said prior to 178 he liked him but wasn't sure if he was the real deal yet. I'm too lazy to dig up the story and post the exact quote. But basically Dana said he was the biggest star in the UFC, and said dude was bigger than Brock or GSP. I understand he's the president of UFC and needs to promote the up and coming fighters. But to say a guy who wasn't even the main event and is still mostly untested is bigger than Lesnar or GSP is crazy, even for Dana standards. And he's said some out there shit.

Japan can do open weight fights, they should make UFC 200 in Japan and could have the main event be the return of Lesnar facing Conor the next face of the UFC. I don't like Conor, he talks too much shit for how little he's done in the UFC. And I don't like his voice it annoys me. He's the male Rousey and I'd love to see both of them on the same card where both lose. He's good but he needs to calm the fuck down for now.

anyone that listens to Dana about any fighter is a fucking idiot. he hypes the shit out of someone and then downplay's the achievements of others. he will do both to the same fighter in a few month period too.

I always thought his shit talking was in good fun, like he's saying everything with a wink. Sometimes he even starts to laugh while he's in the middle of his smack talk. What I find compelling is I thought this was the fight where he was going to have to eat his words, but he backed it up. Now he's targeting Aldo and Mendez...the balls on this guy, but it also means I would be more interested in watching him win or lose vs a lot of other fighters.

This is unlike Sonnen, where I was actually annoyed if he won a fight. Sonnen was obviously trying too hard to be a pro wrestling heel.
