I don't buy the whole motivated/unmotivated BJ thing. I think what happens is that when hes winning it brings out that killer instinct. But when the fight isn't going his way he mentally folds after a round or two. If you watch the second GSP fight and the first Edgar fight and just look at BJs face as the fight progresses you can see him giving up.
Thats fine, but when you watch the weigh ins and the pre fight stare downs (while in the ring before the bell) I noticed a STARK difference between the examples I gave. But I'll agree that he doesn't have a lot of heart and tends to give up too easily when not winning.

I couldn't find anybody that would go with me to see it in person...I don't know if this is the first time it's been in Detroit/Auburn Hills, but it's certainly the first time that it's happened while I've been home.

Guess I'll watch it at a bar like everybody else.

wow.. it's been that long since Shogun won the title from Machida?

So where's the Shogun/Rashad fight?!
hell, Brock fought twice as champion already. Shogun pulling a Silva and stretching the time between title defenses?

Machida should win.

WTFBBQ is Penn going up in weight after losing his title?!
i dont understand his thinking behind this.
Hughes (mr Cardio machine) will dominate especially in the 3rd round, if it gets that far.

Seriously ?? Maybe 3-4 years ago, but Hughes just looks old lately.

Huh? Matt dominated his last 3 opponents and looked great against Ricardo. None were gimme fights either. His submission of Ricardo was sick. Hughes still has a lot of fight left in him.

I'm hoping Hughes gets into title contention and takes the belt. I was a BJ fan and thought he was impossible to beat until the past year or so...he seems to have lost heart. He looks to have lost that hunger he used to have.

Not really interested in the Main event...Rampage looked bad against Rashad and I already know how Machida will fight unless he's going to listen to SS.

Joe Lauzon also looks like he's stepping up in his division as well.

Who else in the same weight class as Hughes is close to title contention? After GSP beats Kos who could be next?

Shields is after Kos, then Fitch. After that no one for the forseeable future.

I'm thinking of parlaying, Hughes, Rampage, Lauzon, Falcao, and Boestch with 10 bucks just for shits and giggles.

I keep LOLing with the people saying BJ is better on the ground than Hughes. That's so laughable. BJ is a great natural fighter, to bad he doesn't have any sort of real drive to be the best. Not to mention he decided to get out of LW and move UP in weight deciding to be a smaller guy in a division controlled by top control monsters. He'll never be top 5 WW, but if he beats Hughes this weekend watch him get placed 6th or so at WW @ Sherdog.

Rampage has great natural skills, solid granite chin. I just don't think he has the work ethic and training partners+gym to mold him into the fighter he can be.

Solid until Waderlei knees you in the face sending you flying through the ropes! God that was brutal

Would still say it's solid, it took over a dozen flush knees and a punch to put him out. Any other fighter would had been asleep after 3 or 4 of the knees. Also against Shogun he took 4 soccer kicks directly to his head and wasn't out. Quinton definitely has the best chin MMA has ever seen. And he came back on Wanderli and one punch KO'ed him, I hope next year he gets a rematch against Shogun so he can be the 1st dude to KO him.

Shogun had to have knee surgery, so that fight should happen next year some time.

He's had knee problems for years. And an interim bout probably won't happen as long as he's on track to recover.

damn.. would have been neat if Silva would also hold the lhw title along side his middle weight title.

Did Rampage look fat to anyone else on the Countdown show? I could cut him some slack for being overweight for the Evans fight after filming the A-team, but this time, there's no excuse.

The fact that he brought the Wolfslair to CA to train him doesn't bode well, either. Rampage admits all the time that he doesn't like training and that he's lazy. If he brought everyone to his home turf, I'll bet he won't be in the shape that he should be in.

Fair enough, I don't usually pay attention to that stuff.

He did look fat. He always gets fat between fights, but he seemed especially fat on the countdown.

In 1997 Penn began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ralph Gracie, eventually earning his purple belt from Gracie.[9] At that point he moved to Nova União where he was eventually awarded his black belt in 2000 by Andre Pederneiras.[9] A few weeks later he became the first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[10] While Penn's most well-known and prestigious achievement was placing first in the black belt division in the 2000 world championships, he had success at the Mundials in previous years. In 1999, at the age of 20, Penn finished 3rd in the brown belt division, losing only to Fernando Terere.

While most people need a decade or more to become a black belt, Penn had, with only three years of training, not only received a black belt but defeated people who had been training their entire lives on his way to winning the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.[11] Penn is thought to have earned the fastest black belt ever and he has the world record for it too.

Only two fights I care about is:

Penn/Hughes - Penn by split Decision

Lauzon/Sotiropoulous - Lauzon by submission

And good to see Karo Parysian & Gabe Ruediger fighting on the undercard. Always entertaining fighters.

You think Lauzon is going to submit Sotiropoulous? I hope you aren't betting any money on that...:\

I would be surprised if the Hughes fight goes the distance too. They have both finished each other, I doubt they play it safe this time.

Yeah, I really think this fight is too close for me to put up and call a winner, but I would be VERY surprised if Sotiropoulous gets submitted.
