I am to buy 120 gb hd.
My pc has udma133.
In practical terms - will I notice any difference,
if it is udma100?
While we are at it:
some hds have ata-6 - what is it?

I believe ATA-6 is the same as UDMA 133. You will not notice a difference between 100 and 133.

I can confirm what techfuzz is saying there - in both cases.

UDMA 100/133 are just the speeds that the hard drive can transfer information to and from the system. The thing is, no drive today is fast enough to sustain that speed, the very best dont even reach 60.

It's like this: imagine you drive a Lada that does 60mph tops. Driving on a city street, you are limited to 30mph, upgrading to a highway lets you reach the full potential of the car, because the speed limit is 65. Taking your Lada on the Autobahn will not speed up the car at all, because you are limited by the potential of the car, not the speed limit of the highway.

Cache size will make a difference though. Get the 8MB cache model if possible if you want the faster drive, they'll have the better warranty as well.

Yeah, ATA 133 is a joke. I have an old ASUS A7V133 over here and it's got ATA66 onboard and a promise raid controller that does ATA100. I've benched the system (and the harddrive) hooked to both ATA100 and ATA66 and there is NO difference at all! NONE. It's a really good hard drive too. So, if there's no difference between 66 and 100, then 100 to 133 sure doesn't matter.
