UCR student gets arrested for "hacking"

Perhaps the only interesting thing in Riverside to happen. It was not this kid's fault that their system accepted the wildcard in deciding if its a valid student id/permin combo.

So if you inputted 860****** and a pin number of 99****, it would be considered valid to the form. Of course this is also the 3rd year in a row where student elections at UCR were screwed the lack of competence by those who ran the elections.

Sad, but then I'm sure he won't be screwed by the judical review. They will make him widthdraw a quarter and retake that quarter. Heck it happened to me, stupid bs no proof I wrote a death threat.

Nematbakhsh, who was expected to graduate this year, will be required to appear before a university judicial review board which could expel him, suspend him, require restitution or require him to repeat an academic quarter.

man, so close to graduating and he screwed up. sucks to be him.

``I think he made his point, but you might say he went about it in the wrong way,'' Duran said. ``An e-mail to the webmaster might have sufficed.''
Riiiiiiiight, everyone knows the webmasters heed every warning received.

He's more of a dumbass for getting caught...although it doesn't give enough details to tell what really happened, it probably wouldn't have been too hard to find an open computer on campus to do his stunt...

You have it all backwards. Dont do the crime if you are not ready for the result. He is just another smartass kid that thinks because he can do something that it is allright to do it. He is no different than those that write l those virus programs that screw up peoples machines.

Now that is actually some helpfull info that I didnt catch in that article....to me thatmakes all the difference in the world. If its an ongiong problem that keeps getting swept to the sidelines then I don't think "a simple email to the webmaster" WOULD suffice.

However I do think he should have still tried. And THEN if they didn't fix it proceed....
But yet a better way of doing it would be to goto school officials and tell them about the problem and when they ask for proof that the elections are bogus, walk them to a PC, and show THEM.

Perception is everything people. In todays world of constant excuses everyone expects a criminal to plead innocent. But if you go about it in an earnest fashion, and make your intentions known up front that this is a problem, I bet they wouldn't be bailing him out of jail right about now (then again maybe they still would, but I doubt it).

Yeah, I'm not saying it was a smart thing to do, just that he's retarded on a higher level 😉

If the school wants to discipline one of their students for a prank, thats their choice, but the way brtspears says he changed the results, I don't see a crime being committed.

Shawn Nematbakhsh, a computer science major at the University of California, Riverside, was arrested Friday for investigation of drug possession and altering computer data without permission.
