Hey,

I have some questions about Honor Colleges in UCLA. In acceptance package, it encouraged to sign up for Honor College program.

if anyone is in this program in UCLA, tell me about it.

what is the benefit except labelled as "Honor" student? Do I have to take additional classes (more money!!) ? Is it worth it in your opinion? Would you do it again if you start freshman again?

My mojor is Biology and Music.

thanks

If you do the Honors program, you get something on your diploma that says "honors". That's about it.
As for what you need to do:

1. take some specially designated honors courses (they are usually sort of unusual but interesting topics; it's not like AP history vs. honors history vs. regular history... i.e. it's not just a higher version of the same course; it's a separate course that you take if you're interested and need to fulfill honors requirements.
2. take normal courses but do extra work to get honors credit. in science classes it's usually reading an article and writing a report on it.

I was in the honors program, as were many other people. It's not really worth the effort and nobody really considers it a big deal. I encourage you to sign up for it though; when I was there all that was required was a simply essay on why you want to be in the honors program. I don't think anyone even reads it, but it's required nonetheless. In any case, you get priority class enrollment for a full year, so it's definitely worth it to sign up, even if you don't follow through with the requirements.

that said it all right there.

now if you complete like an honors research thing your senior year, you get like special recognition at graduation. that's better than the honors on your diploma.

besides if you graduate with a high gpa it'll be listed on your diploma as magna cum laude or what not.

i didn't do honors because i was tired of it all. you also have to maintain a certain gpa and have to keep a certain amount of honors units or else the honors dept will drop you. or threaten to.

like i said, just sign up anyway. you'll have priority enrollment for a full year even if you never take an honors class. they'll only drop you from the program after a full year.

yep, i say just sign up, get ur priority, if the classes aren't too bad for you, stay in it... if you feel like being lazy (like me) you'll just go back to regular and be happy with your regular enrollment... :) i don't care if i don't have priority... hasn't mattered yet :)

Don't you have to take certain honor classes in order to be in the program? or can you stay in program with regular biology major classes?

Since I am going to double major in biology and music, I will probably busy.

The only thing that matters for grad school is your GPA. Grad schools could car less whether you have "honors" listed anywhere on a diploma b/c it's non-quantifiable vs. other students programs. The university you attend has more brownie points attached than any honors program mention. UCLA is very prestigious as it is, so taking honors and meeting their demands is a waste of time and frazzles.

Any Honors program is pure marketing.
