system bootup hangs for a min on configuring network.
then i get a Gnome error when i login: could not connect to . gnome may not work properly. try adding to etc/hosts
i think may have deleted my local host name by accident.
when i try to use sudo to alter hosts file, i get
sudo: unable to lookup via gethostbyname()

what do i do now?

Pop in a live cd, use it to find and edit /etc/hosts on your harddrive.

wow, that's smooth. why didn't i think of that.

i already tried recovery mode, and ctrl+alt+F1. neither worked.

i'll try that when i get home.
