Hoping someone has some insight...

I used vga=791 to install and everything went ok but upon reboot I got a bug stop with a register dump. Neat that the first thing I see in Ubuntu is the BSoD equivalent. Anyways, next I Esc and modify the kernel line to also include vga=197 along with noreplace-paravirt and I get to a bigger window but the frickin window is just black and never does a thing (frozen apparently).:frown:

If anybody has been able to get past this I'd appreciate the insight, thx. And what are some good sites you folks use to get familiar with Ubuntu server? Now back to googling for the resolution...

EDIT: I should mention that I downloaded a virtual PC 2007 appliance with the full LAMP stack and it seemed to work ok. So it should be possible. I want to install it myself and see what it takes to get things going.

Never used VPC, Ive stuck with VMWare Server, and am thinking about going to Xen if I can get a quad core box like I want.

as for getting familiar with ubuntu server....eh, Ive never used that either, but howtos should abound if you google by topic, and if you cant find what you need, try to find a howto for the same task in debian; odds are that the setup for a given service will be identical between the two (id honestly be surprised if that wasnt the case)

Thx Sauron,

I've since downloaded an eval of VMWare Workstation. Yeah it's not free but I've used player before and was really impressed with VMWare tools. And supposedly there aren't any of these problems like with VPC. Probably when my eval expires I can just chuck it and use player.

Just a little update. After downloading VMWare WS things went completely without a hitch. I'm impressed with Ubuntu and the overall current state of Linux. This is a big difference from my experiences with Slackware in the 90s.

You could also use VMWare Server, which is free and allows you to create virtual machines, unlike Player. Also, I think the best source for Ubuntu documentation is the official Ubuntu documentation at https://help.ubuntu.com . http://ubuntuguide.org also has some really good information.

xSauronx, I would strongly encourage you to check out KVM over XEN. I'm using it on Ubuntu Hardy with libvirtd, completely from the command line and it is really a joy to work with.

Yep I should have mentioned I located several resources on ubuntu and both of those were at the top of the helpful list.
