ubuntu server ethernet wierdness

So I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 server edition on my old computer. It is mostly a storage server now running wiith mysql database to index music. Anyway after and hour maybe two the connection to the server seems to slow down a lot. Music stops playing... etc.
Interestingly, if I'm SSHed into it while the connection to it is very slow i can issue commands and do other stuff but its very slow and laggy. If I restart the networking on the server then the connection is back to normal again for 1-2 hours.

what i have tried:
looked at ifconfig while the connection to server is very slow and it did not show any errors.
Ran dmesg and the relevant output is posted below.
looked at some logs and did not find anything related to this.

BTW. computer is connected through Ethernet port to router. the Ethernet card according to lspci is MYSON Technology Inc SURECOM EP-320X-S 100/10M Ethernet PCI Adapter. The module related to this card is fealnx.
Router is AT&T 6800.

All the other computers are connected through wireless to the router and this never happened on any of them. It is very annoying to have to be SSHed into server all the time to restart its network so i can keep listening to music.

At first I thought it might be hardware related but after seeing that the network is up but is incredibly slow leads me to believe that is some sort of software issue. Could be wrong though. Any thoughts?

When I ping the router while it's laggy the times are high (2000-4000ms) and when i restart the network by typing /etc/init.d/netwroking restart it all comes back to normal.

Sounds like a faulty network hardware somewhere.
