ubuntu resolution screw ups

I noticed by default ubuntu resolution is rediculously large. it takes up like 3 screeens. I tried to change it, but it seems to stay that big, but only change the UI size, the rest is all black. Is there a way to fix this? I'm thinking it may be a VMware thing with ubuntu.
 
Are you changing the settings in System->Preferences->Screen Resolution? Try the settings in System->Administration->Screens and Graphics.

The former is for non-privileged users, and only changes the UI, the latter is for administrators and can actually change the graphics drivers settings.
 
I tried the second one, screens and graphics. It sort of worked, its just that it leaves a huge section of black all around, instead of making the screen size smaller. The login window still stay super huge though. I have to scroll until I can find where to actually log in.
 
This should work for anything running X.org.

You can edit your monitor section in xorg.conf to force it to use whatever mode/resolution you want.
You should be able to change resolutions within ctl-alt-keypad minus or ctl-alt-keypad plus key combos.

 
I'm having weird resolution problems with my new FF Ubuntu installation.

I can set it to use 1440x900 (my LCD's native res) and it does (even my monitor OSD reports that it's running that res,) but it leaves a 3" vertical black section on the left side of my monitor, and a .5" one on the right. The desktop is not cut off - it's a full desktop, but it only used ~75% of my screen.

If it were a CRT, I'd adjust it to stretch to fill that area, but I've never seen an LCD have this issue. If I try a lower res, it completely fills the screen, yet look less than pleasant.



edit: Figures. I had this issue for 2 days. Then I post a bout it and somehow manage to get it to work 20 minutes later!

Now, on to Beryl on my ATi x800!
 
Did you install the vmware tools? I have it set so it changes the guest Ubuntu resolution to whatever I size the guest window to be.
