Ubuntu problem

I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10. Everything went fine, except when I login, all I get is a blank brown screen with a small mouse pointer. The mouse pointer works JUST FINE, but I get NOTHING from the keyboard. My password is in all caps, and when I try turning all caps off, it doesn't register. The all caps light stays on.

Just a blank, light brown screen. No "start menu", no icons, no nothing. Just the "welcome" music, and a blank screen.

Any help or links?

Yep. Average question answer question turn around is going to be like 5minutes on irc, but about 2-3 hours on a forum.

Sounds like a driver problem causing a system crash, but it's going to be difficult to diagnose here.

sometimes I will get a keyboard to work in ubuntu just by reinserting plug...but sounds like you got more major problems then that.
Something went south with your install or its trying to figure a piece of hardware out?
try pulling the tv card out and rebooting just for kicks.

Sometimes I have had linux stall on card readers and such when I pull the hardware it can't figure out fires right up.
Are you posative the media is good?
also try a different keyboard.

Come on guys lets PROVE this POINT! TechHead87 are you still having issues? If so or if you fixed them how long did it take on the forum?

Yes the forum is going to be a lot longer then IRC with real people in real time fixing it.

They really need to make something here on this forum for people running a Unix system to seek help on IRC, even Windows for that matter. A forum is really no place to seek tech support especially when you need it fixed now.

No offense to AnandTech this is a great place and I don't mean to undermine them here in anyway, shape or form, but when someone needs help a forum is not the place to seek if for a OS.

Anyhow I love ya AnandTech, please don't be upset at me for saying this AnanadTech Mods.

Interesting problem. Have you thought of changing keyboards. Had a similar problem last night. A simple re-plugging of keyboard plug got it done.
You could try changing keyboard. If that doesn't work, it could be an internal system hardware problem. Its difficult to try diagnostics via the keyboard when hands on is called for. Good hunting.
