I want to install ubuntu on my laptop and am trying to decide if I should get the desktop or netbook edition.

How exactly do they differ?

Interface. Desktop has the traditional Gnome interface, and the netbook has Unity. I much prefer Gnome, and use it on my netbook. It's purely preference.

thank you for clarifying. How do I go about installing both interfaces so I can easily switch between them until I decide which I like better without having to reinstall my OS every time?

I'm not sure without looking it up, but yea, you can have several window managers installed at one time, and you pick which one you want at login. I'd start with the desktop at first, then install the netbook interface using Synaptic. After doing that, when you get to the login screen after booting, there'll be a dropdown box at the bottom where you can pick which interface you want.
