Why would you want this?
lol. Linux nerds putting Linux where it doesn't belong. lol.
lol, android runs on linux.
Yeah, I was gonna say they replaced a Linux OS with a Linux OS. ^_^
This would be VERY useful on a phone with hi-def HDMI output.
Just get on wi-fi, plug HDTV/monitor in, get a Bluetooth KB and mouse, and you got yourself a workstation. And before people say, oh, but it's just a phone, what programs can it run, if you can VPN to your work machine and launch VNC, or just dispatch jobs to a linux box at work directly and set the phone as display.
Apologies if I am missing something, but can't you do that now with a VNC client inside of Android?
The VNC part, you could. But not sure if Android has a display client built in where you can setenv DISPLAY to your Android phone and have a program running on another machine but displaying to the phone. The main point I am making is you can have same device act as a phone and a thin client workstation depending on whether a hi-res monitor is available.
Well that is sort of where I see the whole smartphone market going. Getting to the point that you go to work for a company and get issued your Droid/BB/iPhone, and not only do you have your email on the go and all that, but then you get to the office, dock the device and it is a thin client. The dock would have DVI/VGA out, an ethernet port (maybe, or maybe use secured wifi) and a couple of USB ports and that is your workstation. Files are stored on the company server and the devices can be remote wiped in the event of loss or theft.
And I can see this happening in the next 5 years or so. The devices will become 'fast enough'.
I agree, although I wonder if this functionality will come to tablet-like devices first.
Probably a company is going to hand out a smartphone and a gutted laptop chassis that only has a hires screen, extended battery, and keyboard that you can dock your phone into to turn it into a laptop. Or hand out a docking station + monitor + keyboard and mouse for those who want to turn it into desktop instead.
