I am running off the live cd, to check things out before i take the plunge. but i can't get it to connect to the internet. will i not be able to until i actually install it?

I have an internal ethernet card (3com 3c900b), which ubuntu detects just fine. It is connected to a netgear router. I went to admin->network and enabled it and tried both DHCP, and manual setup of the ip, subnet, gateway ip. the router shows the computer as an attached device, but i still can't browse the internet through firefox. am i missing something obvious? being a newb to linux it's quite probable.

FIX:
i had to refresh the "attached devices" under my router config.
