Here's a getting started manual for Ubuntu 12.04. I just scanned it, but it looks like it'll be good for someone new to GNU/Linux generally, and Ubuntu specifically. For those of you converting others, it'll be nice to include in the install. Get it here...

Nice. I'm guessing this will more or less apply to Xubuntu and other versions as well?

Honestly, I haven't thoroughly looked through it, but it should apply to all the *buntus, and to a lesser extent Debian. It's really a beginners guide. If You're already familiar with GNU/Linux, it may not provide much for you, but it should get you familiar with Debian based systems if you're coming from something else.

Luckily I was trained early in life on US TV listening to Benny Hill
so can understand almost half of what they say 😛

That's a good magazine, even if you don't run Ubuntu. They have good tips and tricks for common end user applications. I've been meaning to dig in to their Python coding guide, but haven't made the time.

Same here as far as learning Python -I have only adapted what others wrote
