Ubuntu Linux suffers from an incorrect patch release

Ubuntu has been one of the most popular desktop-based Linux Distro around. However, some of the users of this open source operating system were left with a command line interface after an incorrect patch was downloaded and installed on their machines.

As per information provided by the developers, the flawed update was pushed to Ubuntu users between 10:30 a.m. (PDT) Monday and 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The patch caused issues for the operating system as it failed to initialize the graphical user interface (GUI).

Canonical are the managers of this project and they have issued an apology to the users of Ubuntu who were affected by this update. They said: ?An update to the windowing system in Ubuntu was incorrectly released for Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. When applied to Ubuntu 6.06, the patch inadvertently breaks the desktop windowing environment on some systems.?

The statement added: ?When we learned of the problem, the patch was immediately withdrawn. Mirrors have also been disabled to ensure that the faulty patch isn?t available from them. We have launched an investigation and formal quality process review to understand exactly how this happened and what corrective actions to take.?

Was that the x core update?
A fix was posted within the hour on how to fix it. All you have to do was use the recovery console or virtual terminal and downgrade.
