Ubuntu Linux -> Loads on one computer fine, but not the other

I installed Ubuntu linux on a 20GB HD that belonged to a computer. It's on master and it's the first boot device...

When I plug it in to this computer, it says "Operating System not found, please replace system disk and reboot...etc" (something along those lines). On the other computer, OTOH, it takes about 3 hours to load GRUB itself. "GRUB Loading1.5......"

Tried installing it so many times, so many downloaded versions, so many CDs, DVDs, Ubuntu, Kubuntu...only thing that's worked in the past is just Debian. I've installed it with the HD connected to this comp, and also installed it with the HD connected to the other comp.

What exactly's going on here? It could be that it doesn't like my hardware, but the fact remains that my computer doesn't even try loading GRYB.

If the drive happens to be a Western Digital, check its label to see if it has a Single Master option, besides just a standard Master. If so, try that.

There is an option for Single (and I've tried all the settings), but I think it's a problem with the installation as opposed to the HD settings.

sounds like a H/W config issue more then s/w, as it's not even hitting the boot loader on the drive (os not detected) or it's taking forever to read it.

First, make sure you check the master/slave/jumper settings. This will cause a delay quite often. Second, doing a direct swap like that is likely to cause errors like that as the device names may not be the same (although if it's primary master in both systems, then it should theoretically work fine).

I'd definitely say it's a jumper/setting issue though. Check those and see if it works.

Ahah, the HD was borked with linux. Linux is usually less forgiving with hard drive errors than windows, I suppose.
In any case, I have ubuntu up and running on another HD - runs like a charm. Took me about 5-10 minutes to get my usb wireless adapter working, and I'm on linux right now.
