Ubuntu linux installation problem

I booted from the cd, went through the partitioning and setup, got to the point where it ejected my cd and asked me to restart, choses amd64 default from the grub boot loader, it went through installing a bunch of packages, and then it just started scrolling a lot of text extremely fast (seemed like mostly gibberish but i couldn't really read it). I left it like this for about 15 minutes but it was still doing it, so i just hit the reset button.

Is this a normal part of the installation? If so, how long does it take and if not, any ideas on how to fix it?

It may have been downloadnig updates. That takes forever.

My really old laptop took around 4 hours on broadband.

What packages did you install? It could be that it is doing updates as suggested by Jtoxic. I did a full/default install using the DVD versio (come with more packages pack into the disk), and it took a good hour to update during first boot. Installing Wine & KDE took an addtitional hour.

Try a minimum install with just gnome. The use apt-get later to install the programs that you need. Or, take a coffee break while it is updating.

It might be bad media. I tried an install off some rather ghastly CDRs(I think I was paid .10 or so after rebates and whatnot, totally offbrand) and got similar problems. Try verifying the media.

It would be nice if you could be a bit more descriptive than "gibberish." Does it have a lot of hexadecimal numbers? Also, scroll lock may do what it was designed to do, so see if you can use that to give us some words we can work with.

Yes it did give hexidecimal numbers. Anyway i formated the partition and reinstalled and now i don't have that problem, but i can't start x server, get a "fatal server error, no screens found" error. I'm gonna wait till tomorrow to try to fix that.
