Ubuntu Linux and wireless

Such as the above. Does the latest version of Ubuntu, 6.06, I believe, support these out of the box?

What distro would have the easiest support of those types of wireless devices?

According to http://ralink.rapla.net/ that model doesn't use a Ralink chipset. I know Ralink chipsets are supported out of box in Ubuntu 6.06(I've a box right upstairs running one).

Certain other chipsets will work, with greater or lesser degrees of difficulty, as well. Check http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz for a big compatibility/chipset matrix for a large number of wireless products. In general, if it has a Prism 2 or Prism 3, or a Ralink, it'll work(most likely). I think Atmel and Orinoco may play nice as well. Support for Broadcom(some of theirs anyway) is coming; but probably won't Just Work(tm) in 6.06. TI is worthless crap for linux users.

Trouble is, many manufacturers aren't too helpful about listing the chipset used(and some have been know to change the chipset without changing the model number at all, bastards). If you hunt down a supported adapter, though, setup is really easy.

Edit: Sorry, forgot about NDISwrapper. This is something of an ugly hack, it dangles enough Windows interfaces off of your Linux kernel for a Windows wireless driver to run. It isn't pretty, it isn't the most solid; but it is the preferred tool of last resort when dealing with a wireless device that just won't work otherwise. I strongly advise you to avoid situations where it might be needed; but you should know that it is out there.

I have one of those. I have had decent success with it, it's pretty nice ralink based one.

Dont' use the Asus supplied drivers though. If it doesnt' work with the Ubuntu supplied drivers then head over to rt2x00.serialmonkey.com and they have forums and such specificly for this type of cards.

I've heard that if you have a smp machine then the stable drivers have problems with that.

AS for the wireless device you listed I don't think you'll have much luck with it in Linux. I've been googling around and I know it's running a SIS chipset, but I can't find much information on it. You may get it to work with ndiswrapper, but I wouldn't bet on it. Sorry.

Ubuntu does a live cdrom. TRy that and see if it works.

If I knew more about the specific chipset it uses then I may be more helpfull.

No, Ubuntu doesn't seem to be able to support that card from a post in the ubuntu forums. My D-Link DWL-G122 is supported though. It runs off the ralink chipset just like drag's device.

I've got one of those, they're nice.
