Ubuntu issue... wireless network won't reconnect automatically

My wireless connection on Ubuntu 11.04 will drop occasionally but it won't reconnect automatically. It'll prompt the network connection window with the network name and the password already filled in. I have to click connect and then it reconnects. When I look at the connection there's an option to connect automatically, which is checked, but I wonder if it just applies at log-in. None of the other computers on the wireless network have a problem so I think it's isolated to this one.

This wouldn't be a big deal except this is a pretty much just a rosetta@home box that runs in the back of my office. I don't sit down and use it often. So it blows to lose a couple days of work over a connection issue. I don't want to have to baby-sit the computer and tell it to reconnect.

Any suggestions? Is this something a different network manager could fix? Some googling tells me wicd and wifi-radar seem popular. It doesn't help that I'm a complete newb at Linux, so tips are much appreciated.

The wireless adapter is a Netgear WG111v3 if that matters. This is on 11.04, but I had the same problem on 10.10 too.
