Ubuntu install help

So I'm installing Ubuntu. I haven't used unix since Redhat 5.1 and i seem to have forgotten just about everything.
Anyway my(current) problem is this. I installed the os ok but then i installed the driver for my 8800 and now it fails to boot into the gui.
What steps do i take from here?

I went to change my desktop resolution and Ubuntu asked me if i wanted to upgrade the video driver since it was not yet installed. Then it automatically downloaded it & installed it. 😕

I just did an install of Feisty Fawn today, in a system with an nVidia 6800GT and it didn't ask me. I used Envy.

Basically, I was installing Compiz Fusion and I followed this how-to:

As long as Envy just uses the same modules that Ubuntu packages in their restricted-modules package I guess that's not too bad, but I don't see why people keep having to create new installers for things that are already there.

I decided to use Envy because 1) I'm a n00b, and 2.) according to that how-to Envy will install driver version 100.10 whereas nvidia-glx allegedly only installs 96.31. I don't know how to confirm or deny (2) but I do know that it works.

For now, if it bypasses the package manager like the installer from nVidia does you'll have issues whenever an update replaces one of nVidia-specific files since it didn't know not to. I looked through the code a bit just now and it doesn't look as bad as automatix but it does some manual things with diversions outside of the package and I'm not terribly fluent in python so I'm not really confident in my analysis.

But I believe if you have the restricted-modules package installed and nvidia-glx all you should have to do is switch from nv to nvidia in xorg.conf and you'll be set so I don't see the need for some python stuff to do that for you.
 
i used envy to set up my x1600 on my laptop and it worked like a charm..can play WoW along with other games with no problems.
 
I figured out what the problem is. I accidentally used the Ubuntu 32bit install disk instead of the 64bit. The Nvidia driver i installed was 64bit.
 
That wasn't it after all. Did a reisnstall with the x86 version and tried the 32bit driver and the thing still won't boot with that driver. Anyone know a command line i can use to boot into the gui without loading the nvidia driver? Hotkeys? Anything?
 
At the beginning of boot, it should ask you to hit a key to enter the boot config, or something like that. Any was hit a key and it will give you some boot choices. Choose the recovery console (I think is what it is called). That will get you to a command line when you can fix your x config. Sorry I can't help you with actually fixing your x config though. I actually have a laptop that does the exact same thing when using the nvidia non-free driver. My solution was to reload and not install the non-free driver.
 
I had an issue installing Ubuntu on my Opteron/NF4/X1900 system with the regular Ubuntu 7.04 x86 install CDROM. The install would go fine until the desktop would try to display. All I would get is a black screen. Ctrl-Alt-F9 and Ctrl-Alt-Bksp did nothing or gave only a flashing cursor that wouldn't respond to commands. A workaround from Ubuntu forums was to use the alternate CD to install in text mode then update the video driver. That got the desktop (Gnome) to load but if I did anything I got nasty graphical errors. Some searching turned up Envy. I installed the .deb and ran it. It updated the video driver and no more errors after the reboot. 🙂
 
Start recovery mode.

dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg (go thru and if it asks choose "vesa" as a driver)
rmmod nvidia (remove nvidia module from kernel)
apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx-legacy nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-new (purge nvidia-glx-legacy, nvidia-glx, or nvidia-glx-new)
rm /lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed (remove lrm cache that prevents installation of nvidia.com drivers)

edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules or /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common configuration file and disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia, nvidia_legacy) via:

Reboot to desktop. Download NVIDIA drivers to /home/$USER/nvidia.sh. Get NVIDIA drivers off nvidia.com that will support 8800 series. Latest in Feisty is 97.55. You may need 100.x+.
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (stop gdm)
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) (get gcc and linux headers required for module compilation)
sudo sh ~/nvidia.sh (install NVIDIA drivers, have it write you a new xorg.conf)
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (restart gdm desktop)
 
I used envy to install the drivers for my GTX and it work just fine -- had to reboot after and it worked like a charm

didn't try to use wine to game with it but it ran compiz just great
