Ubuntu Hangs

I just installed Ubuntu onto my computer and whenever i try to boot it will hang forever on "mounting root file system" It is not a bad install disc beacuse i have created many virtural machines from it, and have run the "check cd for defects" Its not a bad install because I've reinstalled a few times. Also it used to hang like this about every other time when I'd boot from the live CD before the install, but now it wont even boot from that. I'm completely stumped as to what to do here.

memory?

If it's not booting, even from the live CD, that means that it's not drive, cdrom, it's another piece of hardware.

Im using 2gb OCZ gold installed. Everything runs beautiful in windows. It would boot sometimes from cd befor the install but not after. I'm away from my machine now, but i can try booting a few more times to make sure though this afternoon.

I've seen that error before. Make sure your grub configuration is correct. I don't know why it happened to me but one time I ran a bunch of updates and when it edited my menu.lst file it changed my root from (hd0,0) to (hd0,1) and my system did exactly the same thing yours is doing.

Next time you boot hit the arrow key to stop auto boot, scroll down to the kernel you are trying to boot, hit the 'e' key to edit it, scroll down to the line you want to edit (root), hit 'e' to edit it, and see if it looks correct. When you edit it hit enter to get back to the main menu and hit 'b' to attempt to boot. You're not making any permanent changes by the way so if you do get it to boot remember what worked and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst.

Ok thanks for the tip, Ill be able to give it a shot in about 2 hours, Ill let you know how it goes.

EDIT: No luck, i tried editing GRUB, didnt work, tried w/ only one stick of memory, didnt work, I did try to boot into the recovery console, and it hung on the line:

[17179583.608000] ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.0: OHCI Host Controller

Anyone know what that means?

EDIT 2: Its a SATA HDD by the way if it maters

I have/had that same problem on my desktop rig at home.

There is an 11 page thread about this problem currently on the Ubuntu forums. Most people have worked around the bug by unplugging all USB devices during the install.

With my setup, I have to disconnect the 8-pin connector to the USB header on my motherboard for my internal USB card reader. At this point I can install and boot with both my USB mouse and keyboard connected, and I can plug in my Sandisk USB drive and use it after booting, but not during.

Hmm, I read about USB drives, but i never thought about my card reader. Before this i had to disable usb 2.0 support, which would work until i had to restart my computer, and then my keyboard would no longer work and i would have to reset the CMOS to fix it. I overlooked teh fact that the card reader was attached via usb headers. You very well may have solved my problem.

EDIT: Success, it was the card reader, now all i have to do is get 1680x1050 resolution on my viewsonic vx2025wm
