Ubuntu can't find hard drive

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a brand new IDE hard drive and it cannot see it. Does the drive need to be formatted for Ubuntu to see it? I can see the drive in the BIOS. I am trying to install from a CD and it gets to the partion editor and there is nothing there. I went into the editor manually and it does not see it there either. This is Ubuntu 2.22.1 packaged with EMC2 CNC software. I have never messed with Ubuntu before but it seems like it should be able to find the drive.

It should as long as the storage controller is supported, which I can't remember the last time I had issues with storage or networking drivers in Linux. However, since it's not a standard ISO that you're using it's hard to tell. I couldn't even begin to guess what version of Ubuntu the EMC2 CNC 2.22.1 is based upon.

The machine is an older P4 machine. I don't know if Ubuntu wants more modern hardware or what.

No, the opposite is usually true. The older stuff tends to work more flawlessly since the drivers are more mature. I'm still thinking it's the version of Ubuntu you're using since it's not an official build.

I noticed that Linux seems to lack a Via 8237 southbridge driver. I tried using DBAN on a P4 rig with a Via-chipset mobo, and it failed to find any drives.

That's weird. Maybe that chipset is just so broken that no one wanted to touch it.

It is an ASUS P4P800 MB with an Intell Chipset.

My computer that just died was running a P4P800SE. Basically the same thing, and it ran Ubuntu 10.04 fine.

Ok the problem was fixed by putting the HD on the same IDE buss as the CD ROM. It found the disk and installed no problem.

Then I would check the jumper settings on both, the drive's probably set to master or cable select which doesn't work properly sometimes. It'll work as it is now, but having both on the same cable will be slower.
