ubuntu and sound /Problem resolved

Hi,
installed ubuntu about a week and a half ago played cd right out of the box.
Went ahead and set up modem. Installed xine was playing dvd fine.
thats about all I got done but had been into ubuntu a few times and everything was working fine.

Well left it alone for a while and went back in today cd appears to play but no sound.
xine refused to play said no MRL or something like that.
well tried a few things and no luck...ie different drive, cd config, mixer setting, switching from oss mixer to alsa and back..in short nothing was working so I figured I really have not done to much so reinstall and problem fixed.

reinstalled Operating system and cd player, still apperars to be playing, but no sound, have not changed anything else yet. Another thing I tried was bypassing the cabling to the card by plugging headphone into cd player no sound there either.

card appears detected , card and sound works in windows so cabling does not seem to be the cause.

I did try and clean up the wiring in my box earlier this week, but checked connections and seating of card appears ok..plus works fine in windows.

Only thing I can figure is somehow linux pointed it the wrong direction? which is odd since the first time it had no problem?
onboard sound is disabled.

I suppose I should go get a lspci and lsmod to post here to help you help me, will get it in a few..this was a wierd one though

[Megatomic]

Ubuntu 5.04 on my laptop here. When I boot up cold I have to mute and unmute sound (icon in the panel at the top) to get it to work. Do you have do that also?

No upper bars sound icon is unmuted as are all the ones on the mixer and all slider bars are turned up.

I don't think I mentioned its an audigy 2 zs.
Also I notice when I browse the cd it shows the tracks as wav files is that normal behaviour?

It shows version 1.0.8-4ubuntu4
please note though when it installed its default at least this time was Oss mixer

I assume it was the first install also when it worked but I never checked because it was working.

I tried changing to alsa in sound control and brought up the alsa mixer from command line and turned it on that did not work either.

flipped back to oss found somewhere on web where it suggested typing "amixer sset external amplifier on"

that said something like I can not find simple contol,0

will quickly pass this on in case anyone else comes across this problem:

Somehow it changed itself from analog to digital.....don't ask me how or why and so sound just stopped.

solution is :
type alsamixer

look for little boxes with mm in them and move over with arrow key. "m" toggles the switch I had to reset alsa and Oss both from here. there are a lot more switches and sliders then it first looks like so if you don't see it keep going over to the right.

you will loose on reboot if you do not save it
sudo alsactl store
I believe is the command.
Told you it would be simple will start kicking now
