Ubuntu and ATI videocards

Should be fine except for 3D stuff. I believe you can load the driver for 3D but it breaks the standby or hibernate (or both?) mode. I've got a 9600 in my IBM T42 and it works okay but I don't game on it at all. I loaded the 3D drivers (just to try them) and really didn't notice any difference in 2D performance. Standby doesn't work though.

I have used an ATI 9600XT with both Vector linux and Opensuse 10.0. For Vector, there is an ATI-fglrx package on linuxpackages.net that works very well, good 3D hardware acceleration, and for Suse, there is an article on the OpenSuse Wikki about installing using the ATI download installer package and then using aticonfig to configure it. It also had good hardware acceleration. Fairly easy to do. http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Driver_HOWTO I used the aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf method.
