Still has tearing, but xorg not locking up all the time. Everything running pretty fast now too.

Still not 100% but close enough for basic use.

Got rid of tearing, x11 output and setting vsync on in ccc.

Also this is playing a 720p encode x264. Not sure on other videos, but i think non HD atually have tearing...

Nevermind, there is still tearing lol, just not as often. Still not there yet but progress.

Interesting, but I'm 'a chicken' to try it!

I've had ATI drivers kill my installs more times than I care to remember! For instance...

I once spent 2 weeks (no kidding) trying to resurrect an openSUSE 11.1 install, after an ATI driver update, before giving up and wiping my drive. It caused a TOTAL black-screen hardware lockup - no keyboard, no mouse, no disc access, no nothing!!! It's hard to believe a display driver update would do something like that, but I Google'd the problem ad nauseum, and MANY ppl have suffered the same torment, doing an ATI driver(s) update.

I'm successfully running Linux Mint x64 (based on Ubuntu 8.10) under ATI 8.54.3 on this lappy - Compiz/3D working great, et cetera - and I'm leaving it alone! LoL! 😀

Thanks, anyway!

Dont but ATI for linux...

If sleep would work i would be happy, it seems with xbmc there is less video tearing. A mkv file 1080 encode has no tearing. Weird

Maybe i need to change my sleep mode in the bios, right now its S3 i think.

lol yeah, if i ever get mine running 100% i will not touch it. Though i would do test installs.

i have the 9.4 installed and they 100% fine on my Mint 6 64bit, im hesitant to try the 9.5's cause i hear they are not any better anyways unless you have a 4890. I dont do much gaming in linux but open arena works fine and all media files play fine and compiz visual effects work great and there is no tearing 🙂

maybe the 4830? works perfect?

I know 4870 and intel gma 4500 does not.

Mint runs ubuntu 8.10 though. Are you sure theres no tearing? Have you tried google earth? And did you do anything special?

I have not tried google earth, i will when i get home and ill get back to you as im at work ATM. I did nothing special i just downloaded the 9.4 64bit linux drivers from ATI and made the file executable and ran it from the command line. I changed no settings in the CCC other than resolution.

just downloaded google earth it works fine. I see people posting on the linux mint forums about google earth not working alot but its working fine for me now, maybe im just lucky, hopefully all continues to work when i install my 4890 on friday.

Hopefully, i think i tired mint but same results? I will do install of mint 7 when i get home in couple days

Surprising though you have no tearing, no problems with video,or xorg. Good for you though, i tried mint 6 btw still not good.

but mint 7 comes out really soon, maybe today? I havent checked yet.

Linux Mint 7 ?Gloria? released!
http://www.linuxmint.com/

Oh i had a question about mint maybe you know. Can you install programs like you are using ubuntu? I mean can you use the ubuntu ppas? If i added ubuntus ppa for xbmc would it work in mint?

Edit: Lol so funny i was searching for this and finally stumbled on it.
This is Linux Mint 7, codename Gloria, based and compatible with Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope and its repositories.

yeah it uses the same repos, i am going to upgrade to 7 as soon as they release the 64bit version, should be soon.

I must say ati sucks

Installed ubuntu 9 and whoops, no ati drivers for my ati 1200 card, so no boxee on my media computer.
Ran the live cd with ubuntu 8 and it allowed my to install ati drivers.... so I'll go and install that when I get my computer room back from my gf and her aunt/niece/female relative.

Did the install... ati drivers went in, now boxee shows nothing but garbled lines.

Wish I had a nvidia card 😛

yeah they dropped 'support' for that card. Not that the support for other cards are very good lol.

I bet they get better, maybe not though.

I have nothing but ati for a long time now. Had a 8800gt very briefly though.

depending on what your doing, you may not notice any problems.

Does sleep work? Do you get any tearing in movies or compiz.

Wohoo, works finaly.

Had to download the latest drivers from ati, they work with ubuntu 8.10 but not ubuntu 9.04

yeah i forgot to add, that they dont work because of the new x and kernel.

You will be stuck in 8.10 forever, unless the open source driver gets better. But no ati support beyond 8.10.

So I ended up getting a 4870. I'll be putting the system together next week. Should I even bother installing Ubuntu 9.04? I'll want compiz if I do it. I have dual monitors.
