Ubuntu 9.04 RC

Its available for download.

Does anyone know if the RC will be updated to retail when retail comes out?

I wanna install it non production, but dont want to have to reinstall later.

I've never used a Beta/RC release from Ubuntu but I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to upgrade to the full version on release date. It should be as simple as just letting Ubuntu self-update once it detects newer packages in the repositories.

Thanks for the update. Yeah, all you got to do is let Ubuntu update itself and it will be the full final version.

Yea, in fact I have a test server that has been auto updating from 6.06. It has run 8.04 Rc and 7.10Rc at one point or another.

ok sweet then no harm in tyring the RC.

Anyone know if it still is using the same pre released version of ati 9.4?

BTW the torrent speed is really fast but the web speed is sloooowww

Is there a way I can do a in place upgrade to the RC while in 8.10? You can do it an official release, but I'm not sure about the RC.

For all intents and purposes, the RC is the final. IIRC, there have been RCs for Ubuntu that went on unchanged to be the final version. Usually there are very few changed packages between the RC and final.

Thanks for the heads up! I too am looking to upgrade to the full version once it's released, so I guess I'll just let it auto-update and that will be it. Going to go install it now on my Dell Inspiron 1525.

woot woot ati 9.4 released moments ago 🙂

im trying opensuse right now though, gonna try to install in here

Well I only have good things to say about 9.04 RC atm. I put it on my C2D+Intel X3100 laptop and I FINALLY have Wifi working out of the box, in 8.04 it didn't work and required alot of mucking about that I eventually just used my USB WIFI adaptor- but not anymore 😀. Very pleased so far. One question, I have noticed new Intel drivers have come out recently, do they get automatically downloaded and install from Update? Or do I have to find and install the latest myself?

i have opposite experience with 9.04. 8.10 everything works otb. But 9.04 on both laptop and desktop is slowwwww xorg using so much cpu.

Kinda sucks 🙁 i have intel 4500 on laptop

oh and with new ati driver sleep still not working. ATI you suck

IME I've had a helluva time getting graphics to work with my Intel 855 integrated graphics. I've yet to get a driver working on it. They say that even if you do get it going it's somewhat messed up. This is unacceptable seeing as intel unfortunately has the largest marketshare for graphics by far.

You installed it on a Dell 1525 right? Well how is your sound working? Because I cannot get sound to come out at an audible level out of my laptop speakers. I know it's playing if I listen really closely, but it's not practical at all.

edit: nvm, got it figured out

How do you think Ubuntu 9.04 would do on a system like below? Would I be better off trying Xubuntu on it instead? My parents are having issues with an XP computer again and I might try Ubuntu on the desktop that's having problems.... (They only use it for internet).

Pentium 4 1.6GHz (Northwood)
1GB DDR
GeForce 3 Ti 200
40GB Hard Drive

It should work pretty well. It won't be the fastest thing in the world, but it'll be ok for routine tasks.

Hmmm...the intel driver problems seem to be fixed in the RC...very impressive. I'll post here again once I get compiz up and running.

Which intel card? For the Intel 4500 the performance is not good, moving windows across the screen causes excessive tearing, and there's tearing while playing videos.

I have an intel integrated 855 GPU on my laptop.

Compiz works fine, but suspend doesn't work which is a deal-breaker for me (for now).

I tested Ubuntu 9.04 and got about 1 hour of battery life. This is completely unacceptable seeing as I get over 2 hours in XP. Very disappointing. I ran PowerTOP as well, and had the power saving features enabled.

I'm debating whether I should finally bite the bullet and nuke my Vista partition entirely and go pure Ubuntu without any dual booting.

Unfortunately, I do not have an open machine to test the RC on right now.

What versions of MonoDevelop, Mono and NetBeans are in the repository for 9.04? Also, AntiVir and R-Base (r-language) in them?
