This is to let you readers know that Ubuntu 8.04 has been released as Final. I also want to encourage you to download via torrent files. If I remember correctly, right after previous releases, it would take 24 hours to download directly from the heavily loaded Ubuntu mirrors, but you could get a torrent in about an hour. The cool thing about torrents is, when there is heavy downloading of the torrent, it actually goes faster for everyone. In fact, in the 10 minutes it took me to write this post, Ubuntu desktop iso is 15% downloaded.

Anyway, if you don't have a torrent program, check out uTorrent on Windows. Then download your choice of torrent files below and load them into uTorrent.

Ubuntu
32bit Desktop install CD/LiveCD
32bit "Alternate" install CD
32bit Server install CD

64bit Desktop install CD/LiveCD
64bit "Alternate" install CD
64bit Server install CD

Xubuntu

Kubuntu

After downloading, it is prudent (and simple and easy) to check the md5sum. Try winmd5sum on Windows or run 'md5sum filename' on the linux command line.

NOTE: These are good links, but the Ubuntu servers are really loaded down right now, so even getting the torrent file is being problematic. Just be patient, and trying to browse the Ubuntu website is only going to add to the problem. I've actually had the best luck using 'wget' to download the torrent files, so try that if you have access to a linux machine.

The Ubuntu website shows that it's still coming soon.

Are you sure that is the Final Release? Where did you find those links?

I found them by browsing their download site. You'll notice the links are to files on Ubuntu's servers, so you know you are getting good torrents.

I managed to get onto their website just a few minutes ago and now it's giving me a 503. I'll probably upgrade my systems in a day or so, when it's not so swamped. I want to upgrade my old version instead of reinstalling the new version.

I think Hardy is supposed to get better multi-monitor support. I can't want to try it with my projector.

I'm sorry but I'm completely new to Ubuntu. My mom's got an old imac that I wouldn't mind putting it on and I'm a PC gamer myself. What are the benefits or new features in this version? I tried the last version a few months ago.

Old Imac with PowerPC chips won't run anything past Ubuntu 6.04 (I know its the 6.xx)

If its an Intel Chip you can give it a run on a Live boot CD to try it out - love torrents - started to DL from a site and it "completed" at 500ish MB - DL'd the torrent and it just picked right up off the partial file

Upgrading my laptop from 7.10 to 8.04 now. In case you didn't know, you can upgrade using the alternative ubuntu cd. It's MUCH faster than using the old version of ubuntu to download the updates.

Just use the torrent to download quickly and then follow the instructions at the bottom of this page. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

I think I had this like 4-5 days ago, but two days ago there was a 200 something megabyte update.
I used the RC i386 alternative torrent and burned the ISO and updated after.

I've been on it since the 3rd or 4th tribe was released. It's had some stumbles but towards the end it was all polish. This turned out to be a very good version.

Is it just me or do I prefer debian over ubuntu? We used to use fedora at my last job but i was a centos guy.
I love my freebsd but for times when I have to use linux, i prefer debian. Granted it's a pain in the a$$ to find sources for the latest software (i.e. postgresql and clamav).

The new audio system doesn't seem to play nice with 2 sound sources. I wasn't able to use media player and flash videos at the same time, or even with both open and only 1 playing. If media player was opened first, flash would have no sound. If flash video was opened first, media player would be jerky slow AND no audio. This is on a quad core system. I changed the sound options from 'auto' to use ALSA and sound is working like normal again.

Why find sources when you can just pull from Sid?

you don't know if you prefer debian over ubuntu?

Hehe, seriously though, I love both equally. I find ubuntu more usable out of the box, but debian works just as well.

For ppc Mac's, you can get an unofficial ppc port of Hardy here. Any of the ports on this page should be stable enough, you just can not get paid support from Canonical on them.

For "benefits and new features" you can look on the Ubuntu webpage at www.ubuntu.com, although it is probably still going to be loaded down today and the next couple days.

Ugh, try installing proprietary Nvidia drivers from Debian. Its such a pain no matter how you do it.

You can't just use the nvidia installer?

I think I'll download all the 64 bit ones mainly so I can add to the pool of seeders. Of course, I may eventually give them all a go as well, when I have the time.

DLing 64-bit from windows, I think I screwed up my xorg in 7.1 so I will just wipe and reinstall.
