i've never used linux before but im curious to see how it all works. im probably going to format and install a clean copy of xp sp3 on a 10 gig partition and then install ubuntu on the remaining 50 gigs. any foreseeable issues on a dell laptop (old 8600 with 2 gigs of ram)? i think i have a bunch of links to get me familiar with the basics, but im just worried about any issues connecting online. ideally, i'd like to have a quick system for surfing the net, checking email, dl'ing stuff off of newsgroups and occasional BT downloading.

i think i will wait before i upgrade.

You've waited long enough. 😛

Lol!

im still using feisty 😱 i had issues with gusty gibbon. not sure if i want 8.04 yet

I had many problems with Gutsy. The default kernel that shipped with it had some issues with SATA optical devices and other weird things. My workstation actually ran faster with less RAM in it on Gutsy. I have no idea what the cause was, or if it even had anything to do with the kernel, but all I know is that once I updated the kernel to the one in Hardy all my issues went away.

I don't think so, a quick Google says that it's got an onboard Broadcom NIC which should work out of the box as well as everything else. I would be really surprised if the LiveCD didn't have working everything too.
