I have tried several times to install the Beta Nvida drivers for my 9600GT in Ubuntu 8.04, and failed. I am not new to installing the binary drivers on either Linux or Ubuntu. I have both googled and searched ubuntuforums, and none of the advice offered has worked. (I refuse to compile a earlier kernel to get my binary driver working.) Are there any others with similar experiences that have succeeded, and how did you do so?

Seems that Ubuntu does not want to detect the GPU. Here is the xorg.conf file generated by nvidia-xconf.

Stay tuned, I'll be upgrading to hairy hardon, er, hardy heron and the latest nv binary drivers this weekend. Sounds like the kernel module for the binary driver didn't compile or compile correctly -- I had similar problems with VMWare's kernel modules on my server box with 8.04 current. Seems like right around kernel 2.6.24-12 or so there were some header file changes.

Make sure you have the right header files installed to match your running kernel and try recompiling the module again. The error log should be informative.

I'm downloading the AMD64 ISO now to see if this is a problem only with the 32 bit version. From the post I am reading between google and ubuntuforums, it looks like something is broken when it comes to nvidia. It seems to be hit or miss if you can get it working on the 32 bit version, from what I am reading.

Edit:

I am talking about cards not supported by the glx-new driver.
