Ubuntu 7.10 download information

Please use bittorrent to download the latest Ubuntu. You will get it much faster that way than you will through the mirrors, for these first few days at least. And that's if you can even get the mirror download to start.

Your bittorent client should verify the md5sum automatically, but I like to do it manually also, just to be sure. I recommend this open source program: winMD5Sum if you are on windows. On linux, you should just be able to do "md5sum filename" at the commandline as the md5sum program should already be installed.

Thanks Brazen for the information. I am seeding both the i386 and X64 desktop versions so I have the final installation disk and to participate in helping the torrent seeding process.

No problem. I wish Ubuntu would have their torrents on the main download page, but as it is you have to browse to releases.ubuntu.com, otherwise you would never even know torrents were available. I'm seeding the desktop and server versions of i386 and I'll probably keep seeding for a week or so. I started downloading at work from a mirror, but it turned out to be much faster getting the torrent to my home computer and then copying the files from there 😀

I just upgraded to FIoS @ home and I've got a 20Mb down / 5 Mb up connection now. I'm currently using Feisty on my desktop and I'd be happy to seed. What BT client do you recommend for Ubuntu? Is Azureus the best?

I really really dislike Azureus's user interface, but that is just a personal preference. Best one I have used, on any platform, is ktorrent, but I would probably find something else to use under Gnome. I actually use torrentflux-b4rt, though.

I couldn't get anything to install from the official repos so I tried just clicking the link in Brazen's post and it worked. Apparently 'Bit Torrent' is built into Feisty. 😉

I'll be seeding the i386 desktop version for a while. Started really slow but picking up now. Nice to be able to help out the community with this bandwidth. Thanks Brazen! 🙂

I'm downloading. Super fast! I'll seed while I eat dinner, but after that the computer I'm downloading it on will be down as I switch back to Ubuntu from PCLinuxOS. 😀

I got the whole 695MB file fine but got an error during uploading. I had only uploaded 321MB to peers. Stopped the client and restarted it and it's just sitting here. Status is 'finished' and 'connecting to peers'.

Tried another restart and got, 'Problem connecting to tracker. urlopen error (111, Connection refused). 🙁

Edit: Got it going again. 🙂

yeah, I had a problem installing some programs from the repos, too, and then tried again later and it worked no problem. My guess is the repos are overloaded because they are probably on the same servers as the download mirrors, which is another reason why it is important to use bittorent rather than the mirrors 😎

Thanks... I'll check that out when I get home.

Checked my the default BT client this morning and it had timed out again. I stopped and restarted so hopefully it will stay up for a little while now. Should I do any port forwards for my box running the BT client?

Typically, yeah you would have to forward some ports from your router, but what port depends on the client. I looked over the built-in gnome bittorrent client but I could not figure out what port it uses.

I also did look over uTorrent and like the look of it very much. I think if their webui gets out of beta I may have to check it out.

This is a horrible code name or whatever. Gutsy Gibbon is annoying the hell out of me. 😛
Who ever came up with this, and those that supported it, need to be slapped.

Just call it Ubuntu 7.10, problem solved 🙂

Or if you're into kid speak, I'd say "gg" would work fine 😉

Latest version is 1.0.15 final (10/16/2007)

Any idea if Ubuntu's built in update system will update Alsa to the latest version in this release or will I have to manually update it?
