Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper

Just curious how you guys like Dapper. I'm loving it right now (trying the AMD64 Live DVD). For me it seemed very easy to use, with the sole exception being a crashing video driver just like in SUSE 10.1, but safe video mode worked fine. My guess is this is an isolated problem with my A8N-SLI D/7800GT config so I'll focus on what matters. Right now I like the packaging system more than SUSE (Synaptic is great) and the whole thing seems a lot faster in general.

My Audigy 2 ZS worked right out of the box and my mouse/mouse wheel worked. Also, keyboard volume up/down were properly mapped in GNOME right from the get-go, something I can't say of any other distro.

Anyone know how to use linux-amd64-k8 instead of linux-amd64-generic for x86-64 even for a .1% boost? Possible with the Live DVD? I do see the package in synaptic but I assume I must specify the alternate kernel at the command line.

If the kernel isn't on the DVD you're out of luck unless you want to remaster the disc with the new kernel. I really doubt it would make any amount of difference though.

I tried to run it on Virtual PC, but it said something about the checksum for the device ID not being valid when it tried to boot the kernel. That's been my experience with it so far.

I'm running Dapper right now.

My experience? Fantastic. This is the first distro to load my wireless card without ndiswrapper. The first distro that didn't have hours of trial and error trying to minimize tearing in videos by experimenting the h-synch.

Anyone have problems upgrading?

Mne started, then gave me a failure code, aomthing about my network. Now I can't get it back to update again.. Using the

gksudo "update-manager -d"

I've been using it for a few weeks... been stable and very usable. Some have complained of speed issues, but it's responsive and fast for me on 2800+ AMD64, sometimes more so than XP (this includes Firefox loading, which is notorious for being so slow on Linux). The June 1 release should go off without many issues. I installed from CD, no dist-upgrade.

hopefully should be smooth. Been my main rig since Flight 5. Its reallly coming along great. Still stupid stuff like FF being faster in Windows, but I'm spending more time with epiphany which seems like its FF but without the slowdowns.
I'm expecting the absolute final to be VERY polished...it should be considering they delayed it six weeks for pure bug fixing as well as getting SCIM input settled and part of the default setup.
Only thing I wish that didn't change is the initial bright orange...okay maybe not default but leave the option for those who want it

I rant it for a few weeks with no problems. Well, one problem. It was much slower, and more bloated than my Debian XFCE install. So I switched back.

Had no hardware problems or anthing though, all worked very nicely.

You must have some odd hardware, I've never seen a wired NIC that didn't work in Linux.

broadcom gig nic & intel 2915 wireless worked out of box...Probably has some oddball NIC and a broadcom wireless.

My only hitch was the install...I had to use gparted to stop the live enviro from using my swap partition, or the formating of /swap fails. took me about 45 minutes to figure out the problem. everything else seems to be working fine so far.

I'm running it right now with compiz and XGL. It's amazing.

I don't see why everyones so annoyed with the "bloat". It runs amazingly well on my computer in my sig, if your a real speed freak theres a hack to use enlightenment in gnome.

I upgraded from Breezy to it & so far, no good.
It deleted my XP from Grub, I have no audio ("did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.") & if I boot into Dapper from Grub I have no display.
I tried doing a "reconfigure", but all it did was re-edit my Grub.menu.lst & removed XP again.

I don't understand how anyone can say that Ubuntu is the easiest distro for new users. I prefer Suse a hundred times over to Ubuntu. I installed dapper today, and I have to admit the install was incredible and flawless. Booting up to a live cd, and then simply clicking the install icon on the desktop and actually installing from the desktop was great. However once I was in I tried following some guides on enabling multiverse repositories/getting the necessities installed and what not, and it was just a royal pain. I mean wtf I couldn't edit my sources.list file? I couldn't save it because I didn't have permission. I look it up on the net and I have to edit it with terminal? Why can't I just click save, have the option to put in the admin password then and save it. Pisses me off. Anyway that alone and some network issues turned me off.

IMO from a new linux user standpoint it is a thousand times easier installing suse and following the step by step guide from the jem report to turn the box to a powerhouse workable machine.

If anybody can point me in the direction of a guide similar to the jem report for dapper, which is better and actually functional unlike this one I am totally open to it. I'd like to learn to love ubuntu, I just haven't had a pleasant experience with it yet.

There is a guide for Breezy for the Mx510...check that and be careful when you do stuff because they ahve a tendency to move things around. Check the howto guides

I know because I was thinking of doing it, but I never use the side buttons so it wwasn't an issue
