Ubuntu 15.04 and VMware workstation 12

I have Ubuntu 15.04 running in a VMware Workstation 12 player(the free version). Recently there have been two "Ubuntu base" updates. One is 34.6 MB the other is 65.0 MB. Both of these updates on reboot after installing(together or one at a time) causes Ubuntu to go to a black screen with a cursor. Never going to login screen, or doing anything else. Lucky I made back ups. Any ideas to fix this, besides not doing the updates?

Thanks for the help!

I'm actually having problems myself just to get Ubuntu server LTS to boot in VMware. I get a kernel panic and it says the OS disabled the CPU.
