Does any one know how to move the bar across the top to the bottom?
This is the bar with the clock/date/email envelope on it.
I don't like it at the top, it annoys me.

I have installed the gnome-shell and I still can't find a way to move it to the bottom of the screen.
Have also tried right click, left click,Alt-right click and Alt-left click.

I don't think so. The top bar is used for the global menu. If you could move it to the bottom, I think it would cause brain breakage in use :^D

In 904 it could be moved to the top/bottom/left/right with ease by right clicking.

I hope I can find a way...

9.04 didn't use Unity. The bar has to be on top for Unity to work. Perhaps you'd prefer Xubuntu, or Kubuntu?

If you're using Unity, I don't believe it has any facility to move the menu bar.

There may be a third-party utility that can add that functionality, and you can always modify the source code and compile your own custom version of Unity to make it do whatever you want. However, Canonical hasn't been very interested in adding much customization options to Unity, so if customizing the look and feel of your desktop environment is important to you, Unity might not be for you.

I have never looked at either one. But i will.

What are some key differences?

Xubuntu is supposed to be "light". In my experience it isn't much lighter than the old Gnome2(eg Ubuntu 9.04). It lacks some of the beauty of Ubuntu, and some of the included programs are a bit more "basic", but it's a nice familiar system. FWIW, if I ran Ubuntu, I'd use Xubuntu.

KDE is fairly large and polished desktop. It looks similar to Win7, but has a lot more functionality. It gives you a lot of customization power, but it can take some learning to get the system the way you want. Basic usage is straightforward, but customizing is like flying an airplane. Lots of controls to play with, and buttons to tweak.

Thanks

I'll try Xubuntu.

Ubuntu installed in less than 2 hours this morning. Of course I wasted 10 hours trying to setup VirtualBox with a Win2K guest that I just found out will never work....

Is Cinnamon in the Ubuntu repos, or do you have to compile it yourself? Maybe a PPA?

Cinnamon
I like the look and the layout. But,it slowed everything down firefox crawled even with nothing else running. And VirtualBox locked up on launching of a VM. Could not add any more "workspaces" to the default of two. Quacking the web produced no help so far and some others having the same problem with "workspaces".

I am not giving up on Cinnamon yet. I'll need to find solutions before I commit.

I really don't want to reinstall VirtualBox I just got the VM's set up the way I want.

If I was starting from a fresh install of 1204 and could figure what is causing the slowdown and correct it. I would quit looking for a unity replacment.

I do think Cinnamon is the best I have seen so far.

I am not having any problems with mine sofar. I also am running a very fresh install too. As for multiple workspaces, I just point to the left upper corner. Then the add bar pops up on the right of the screen. I can add as many as I want.

That is the way it is supposed to work. The add bar does not come up for me.

VirtualBox runs until I launch a VM then it locks up. I can't shutdown VirtualBox till noon. After that I am going to create a new VM and try again.

I am noy giving up on it yet. I like it enough to try some more.
