Ubuntu 11.10 Multiple Drives

I am installing the new version of Ubuntu later and I wanted to gather some information. I am running a solid state drive with 4 other drives for storage. The SSD is specifically for operating system files, but I have only experienced that in windows.

I was wondering if the same thing is necessary for the new version of Ubuntu? I am unsure of how ubuntu does partitioning, and what partition holds all of the program install files, but is that something that seems logical? How big is a full install of Ubuntu 11.10 completely updated?

If I were to separate the partitions, which partitions should go on the SSD, and which ones should go on my other drive?

I haven't used any of the 11.x versions, but a stock install should fit within 10gb. I'd put everything but /home on the SSD. I like 10gb /, ~1gb swap, and whatever you want for /home. I use the rest of the drive on a single drive install. You'll have to use the advanced partitioner. You'll see where it asks on the install screen

Btw, I forgot to specify, but what I intended to say was put /home on the platter drive. /home is where all your user data goes, so it can be sizable, and speed isn't as much of a concern.

Do people still put the logs and tmp on a platter..?

That would reduce writes to the SSD, but I don't think it matters much for a typical user. The SSD would likely be obsolete before routine use burned it out.

Have a similar question so I'll resurrect this thread..

I'm relatively new to linux, but trying to plan out my HDD config for dual boot win7+ubuntu on my desktop. (had it before with vista but wiped when I got 7). I'll probably go with separate disks for each OS. Ubuntu on an SSD, plus half of a larger 1TB disk (rest for win7 with Steam etc)

This may be a stupid question; but is there an option in the package managers to install to the spinning disks, instead of the SSD? I haven't looked much into it, but I imagine if I keep hitting install there I might fill up the SSD unless there is a way to put some software on the larger disk. I want to try some games in wine for example. Can I apt-get and install somewhere else?

sorry if these are stupid questions:$ I'm trying to figure this out before I install and play around so I can plan my partitions etc. Bit of a chicken/egg problem..

Not really. You may want to put / and swap on the SSD, and put /home on the platter drive. That should give you plenty of space as long as you're reasonable with the programs you install.
