Since I've never bothered to look very hard at Ubuntu's maintenance releases, how do Ubuntu maintenance releases compare to Windows service packs? Is Canonical just rolling up previous patches, or are they adding functionality and integrating issue-specific patches (i.e. hotfixes) like MS does?

Both, I believe. Though I don't recall any major feature updates specifically, I tend to run the most current releases.

If you're been keeping up with the updates, you're already running 10.04.1 LTS. :)

There was no difference between the day before and day after they released 10.04.1.

Is that the same as MS Service Packs, ViRGE? I haven't run Winders for a while...

MS' service releases have included:

Updates
Hotfixes
Rollups
Feature Packs
Power Packs
Service Packs

Historically, new features are included in Feature Packs, Power Packs, and Service Packs. If a release only includes already-released updates or hotfixes, it'd be considered a "Rollup". But I don't recall any Operating System Rollups since maybe 2003. MS still issues Rollups for Applications, especially server Applications.

That makes sense! Essentially, they are rolling the updates into a single cohesive package.

One of my petty gripes about Winders is, every time you do a fresh install, you have to spend hours n' hours in WU, installing update after update. One update spawns another -- each one requiring a reboot.

If you have a stale Ubu CD... when you do your initial update, after installation, it'll download (like) 800MB of updates. LoL! :awe:

I suppose the whole idea of having a 10.04.01 Maintenance Release, e.g. Rollup, is to avoid having to download & install the equivalent of the whole CD, all over again, via Update Manager.
