Okay, I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my hard drive...dual boot with Win XP, but that's not my issue. After I type my "username" and enter password, it comes up with

******@ununtu:~$

The question is this, what do I do from here?

If this doen't work, I will probably want to uninstall it! So please, any help is greatly appreciated (as usual)
 
How did you do the install? What option did you choose? I think the default is going to give you the Gnome GUI.
 
After you login, type this:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Answer all the questions, and then reboot. You don't actually have to reboot, but it will be easier for you. If you don't want to reboot, then type:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

That will get you a working gui (or well, it should).

After booting from the CD, it asks what type installation, and states to type "server" as it it the best choice for home desktop PC's.

Reinstall and don't choose server. Just go through the default option.

Um Ubuntu Server is definatly not the "best choice for home desktop PC's" what you wanted to do is to just hit enter and let it default install for you. Ubuntu breezy server is basicly Debian 😉

re-insert your Ubuntu install disk, let it boot and when it comes up asking you what you want to do, just leave it blank and hit enter. It will guide you through the rest.

That's what I thought you might've done. As others have said, reinstall with the default option and you'll have the GUI.

it would probably be quicker to just do the reinstall from teh CD.

Assuming he has 48x or better, on a separate ribbon, yadda yadda yadda

much more efficient than figuring out which packages to download, DLing them all, etc etc etc

So to answer your question:

theoretically, yes
practically, not advisable
 
Nothinman, there is and he can apt-get it from the CD but it's kind of hard to type someone through it, and if he gets it from the repositories he's just wasting bandwidth, the easiest thing, especially if it is a clean install is to just reinstall it, it'd be faster anyway.
 
Update as of 04-04-06. Still not working. I gave up, deciding that I don't care if I have another OS installed on my system or not! 🙂

Yes I did. Now I'm getting a different error message, I will have to write it down and post it here. I got past the login problem by default install. let me check it out and post it here
 
Okay, here it is. When I first start Ubuntu, it runs and starts everything, and then I get this message:

"Failed to start xserver. It is likely that it is not set up correctly...wwould you like to view xserver output to diagnose problem? <yes> or <no>

I choose yes, and click ok a few times before I get to the ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" ubuntu ttyl

I then am given the chance to enter my username and password, THEN I get to the robert@ubuntu:~$

I then try startx, hit enter and get the following
FATAL SERVER ERROR
FATAL 10 ERROR104

Okay, all you smarter than me people, now what?

Keep in mind that I have "successfully" installed this like three times now.
 
did you completely wipe the drive of any references to your previous install? it looks like it's still trying to run the server install instead of the latest install with gnome.
 
I can't believe no one has asked what kind of video card you have yet.

Also run the command 'grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log' from that terminal and see what it says, lines beginning with (EE) are errors and should give you some clue as to why it's not working.
 
I'd hate to thread crap and say get another distro, but Ubuntu/Debian has always given me problems getting a display when first installing..

Is deleting the partition on which it was originally installed on good enough?! If so, then yes it was totally deleted.
