UBS is stringing me along

So I was suppose to get hired to work as an intern at UBS a while ago, and I have been keeping in touch with the person who was suppose to hire me. He keeps assuring me that everything will be fine, since they are in a "hiring hold" and they are trying to "obtain a budget" to pay the interns. He said the interns werent paid in the past, and they are trying to get a budget to actually pay the interns this time.

Its been 1.5 months, and I am getting impatient. The person who is suppose to be hiring me actually gave me some research to do recently.......he wants me to find out if there is a better method of marketing the service other then coldcalling(telemarketing). I am not getting paid for this, and I dont even know how secured my position is.
What I find kind of shiesty is that I should be doing this kind of research as an intern, and not someone waiting to get hired.

Fellow anandtech members, what do you guys think i should do?

he's located in Palo Alto, near Stanford. If you were up here maybe I can ask him to help you out. I dont know if he can do anything for you down there. btw, he's an assistant manager.

UBS, as in the financial services firm? I've been thinking about applying to them recently. Haven't had time to check out their job listings, though..

yeah, they used to be Paine Webber i believe before they were bought out by UBS.

You are right. It use to be Paine Webber and they were bought out by UBS(United Bank of Switzerland). I think Paine Webber went down the drain after their involvment with the Enron scandel and the huge lawsuits that followed.

but if u have any questions i'll ask him for you. maybe he can give u an inside scoop.

Maybe he can help me out with my "research." Is there effective marketing strategy other then coldcalling? Any other way an intern can attract customers other then coldcalling?

i'll ask him first thing in the morning. haha i can hear him now..."first thing you need to learn is STOP STAYING UP SO GODDAMN LATE..." hahaha, actually i can ask him in about 3hours since he'll be up getting reading for work.

he'll say this cause you gotta be at work when the market opens...i believe thats 6am. but since he has to commute and there's also traffic he leaves the house by 5am...that means waking up at 4:30... well he gets off at 2pm.

don't know how it is for you though. PM me if you got any other questions. i probably won't reply till later tonight cause i work till 6pm

when you say "intern", do you mean as a college student (like a junior in college)? If so, he is lying. Interns get paid (and pretty well) at all big wall st. firms (UBS included).

actually, i believe it is union bank of switzerland... and they have had many name changes due to their acquisitions of companies such as sg warbur, dillion read, paine webber, etc.

As a newbie, I have been noticing that there are always a few individuals always trying to instigate an argument and trying to redirect the focus of the post away.

Trolls, right?

Correct. I deal with their Zurich office every now and then. Friendly folks.
