Ubiquiti Cloud Key

Can someone explain what a cloud key is? I am trying to figure out if I need one.
I only have Mac computers running macOS, and don't want to have to install VM just to access the controller for a ubiquity switch/AP. I know that you can't access the controller through macOS, but can you access the controller through say my Synology NAS? Or would I not need to worry about that if I bought a Cloud Key?

Thanks

The Unifi controller software can be installed on MacOS or Windows.
The cloud key is simply a compact, low power dedicated device that ONLY runs the controller software, and can be accessed easily remotely. If you have a local computer that you can use for such purposes, feel free to use it instead of a cloud key.
