Is picking up someone and dropping them off REALLY worthy of much more than minimum wage?

Seriously. Think about it.

The wrong question. People doing Shit Jobs is a requirement for the system to function. Is it Moral or Sustainable to relegate such necesities to Minimum Wage status based on Education/Skill alone? Especially if that relegates the Worker to such a status as to make them unable to support anyone but themselves and even then just barely.

Such a system is bound to fail.

Nobody is pointing a gun to these people's heads and forcing them to drive. IF they want to work for .70/mile they should be allowed to. Have enough drivers protest and refuse to work for .70 and they'll have no choice to raise their rates.

1st world problems hehe

Some cities/countries have really stupid laws and have made taxi drivers go through insane hoops at massive expense. I understand the annoyance at uber.

In other cases taxis enjoy an undeserved monopoly, punish customers due to not having enough taxis (and their lobby to control the number of licenses, too) and it's great to see uber crush them.

Considering wear and tear on the car, gasoline expenses, etc? It might be.

That being said, I don't really know/understand exactly what Uber is. At first I thought it was an app so that random drivers could find who they share routes with to make carpooling easier, but apparently that's not the case if these cars are marked and there are official Uber drivers. Does it just come down to their usage of algorithms to detect/predict traffic surges and price accordingly? If so, I don't see why the job wouldn't be sustainable since Uber drivers would probably quickly realize whether or not they actually making a worthwhile living.

Its more than just an app that calls a taxi -- it simplifies the entire transaction. It gets a driver to show up at a location you request, it records the time and distance and when the trip is finished it automatically makes the payment to the driver through the app so you never have to deal with a pulling out a credit card or money or anything, which I think is actually the most important part (arguing about payments with a cab driver always sucks). And yes, during certain times (like when all the bars close on a friday night for example) rides will be more expensive. I've always had cleaner, more professional service from uber/lyft than taxis as well. Edit: also, cheaper
