I already have a Dell U3011 and I love it. I saw through where I work I can get one of the new Samsung 60hz 4K monitors at cost, and I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to upgrade.

I currently have two EVGA 780Ti superclocked cards in SLI to run my Dell, and I would be sticking with those if I did do the upgrade and just live with the reduced framerates.

Think it is worth selling the Dell and going with a TN based 4k monitor?

Thanks.

I don't get what use a 4k display is unless it's around 40 inches. I have a 27" 2560x1400 and a smaller dot pitch would be uncomfortable.

I get the dell 30 in. I got a Dell U2711 and the PPI is small enough already. any smaller and I don't think I read standard web page without scaling it up, something most webpage and windows app do not do well right now.

Excellent indepth review:
http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/5269/samsung-lu28d590d-review-4k-becomes-affordable

I'm impressed with what they can do with TN, the best response time without much sacrifice on colors or angle of viewing.

Yup. People who do the kneejerk "IPS>TN" thing haven't kept up with the times.

"Regular readers will know that we generally aren’t fans of this cheapest panel technology, because the colour fidelity often isn’t too great and the colours shift, when looked at from an angle. As such, many readers responded negatively to the announcement that cheap UHD monitors would utilize this panel type. We, too, were sceptical, but after testing the LU28D590D we can only state that this is a TN monitor worth considering."

IPS > any TN

No ... IPS image quality and viewing angles are better than TN image quality and viewing angles, generally speaking. That's where the benefits end. I'm not running IPS because there are no 120hz/144hz 1080p IPS monitors for $300

The use is mostly just gaming, with a little web browsing. I love my u3011, and my 780ti SLI cards run it beautifully, but the Samsung did catch my eye at its price point. I am leaning more towards just keeping my dell, but my work notice of $650 is hard to ignore for the samsung.

Thank you for the input so far

IPS vs TN wouldn't matter much in your use case I'd say. What's your expectations when it comes to performance? Because even 780 Ti SLI won't hit 60 on every game at 4K, in fact some will struggle to hit 40-50. Be prepared to lower settings if you want a fluid 60 FPS.

This.

There is a reason IPS has traditionally been the only 30'' LCD option. A TN at 30''+ would already have viewing angle issues with you sitting right in front of it.

Pretty sure those who think TNs 'are just fine' either don't care about image quality (that's fine), don't know what they are missing (also fine) or need the extra speed that only TN can provide today (i.e. gamers, 144hz, etc).

Seems like a decent monitor looking at the review. Guess a person would need to see one hands on to make a final decision if it works for them.

OP - I should be getting my Samsung on Tuesday. I'll compare it directly to my 30" HP and post some thoughts sometime next week.

Still too many issues with DPI scaling so I don't think the 4K display is worth it yet.
